What Everyone Should Know About Riding on a Greyhound Bus

The first thing you should know is that they have bathrooms on the bus. Now if you can it would be a good thing to bring your own hand sanitizer since they only provide wet naps to wash your hands. You will want to bring a packet of tissues in with you since their toilet paper is extremely thin.

There is not a whole lot of legroom. Someone who is 6 feet will have a problem squeezing their legs in between the rows of seats. Worse still is the fact that the person in front of you can decide to recline their chair making your tight squeeze into a death grip. If you can try to get a row of seats with out sitting next to anyone or sit at the very back of the bus right next to the bathroom. There is a row of there seats there if you sit in the one closest to the door. Sometimes you can snatch up the front seats next to the driver, which is great since the extra legroom and distance from the smelly bathroom makes it one of the best seats on the bus. Of course, you are closer to the door, which may be left open at rest stops. Your climate control will be limited since the door will let the weather conditions in to your seat. If a disabled person comes onto the bus, you may lose that seat since it is reserved for those who need assistance from the driver.

The next thing you should know about the bus is that it is overcrowded near holidays and on the weekends. One Christmas I met a man who had traveled from Florida to NYC on the bus he had been on for days. To add insult to injury he was bumped off a few buses because they were to full. Greyhound's tickets do not always guarantee you a seat so he stood for 12 hours in a crowded bus just to make it to the city in time for Christmas. If you must travel during the holiday season, you should have a cell phone with you in case your bus is delayed or if you miss a connection. Call ahead if you are unfamiliar with the route your bus is going to take, you should ask if the stations where you will be dropped off would be open. If they are going to be closed, it is because it is nighttime. You will need to plan ahead and find out what business are open near by especially if you are going to be waiting for a bus more then 20 minutes just make sure you can see where the bus will pull in from where you are going to be.

  • Bring your own toiletries and avoid the bathroom on the bus if you can.
  • If you are tall you may need to find a place to sit with more leg room.
  • Travel during the week and avoid using the buses around the holidays.
They are currently replacing their old buses with brand new ones.
