Let's begin by taking a look at Darwinism, at the theory of evolution itself. According to the dictionary (The Free Dictionary online: Medical Dictionary) evolution (Darwinism) is:
"A theory of biological evolution developed by Charles Darwin and others, stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce."
As well as being:
"a gradual, orderly, and continuous process of change and development from one condition or state to another. It encompasses all aspects of life, including physical, psychologic, sociologic, cultural, and intellectual development, and involves a progressive advancement from a simple to a more complex form or state through the processes of modification, differentiation, and growth."
Both of these boil down to this fact that outward stimuli cause growth and change over a given period of time. Now as soon as you observe this you can see why my original thought was so instantaneous, I was aware of both of these definitions and as you read them as such there isn't really any way that humans could not be evolving is there?
In the question that was asked though it was stipulated that there were no longer trials of survival, that in fact humanity faces no survival difficulties. I would reply to and address this aspect of the question very simply, there are numerous difficulties of survival occurring. It has never, in human society at least, always been about life or death. Simple survival isn't enough, or rather living isn't survival in human society, and success is survival. It isn't a matter of living or dying it is a matter of whom and who is not successful. The successful have an easier time procreating; they have an easier time reproducing and finding equally successful mates.
This is breeding for factors that now cause success, and eventually will cause us to change, certain behaviors are being established and evolving as successful beyond that certain kinds of people and certain genetic factors attribute to success and these are what is bread for. Now whether I or anyone else could really predict exactly what traits are being genetically brought about in humanity, I'm not sure on that score however I don't know that we are definitely evolving. It isn't so much a question as survival of the fittest but rather of natural selection of the most successful as being the most desirable in our society.
Also as far as another point in the question, the one that gets me going the most would likely be the segment inquiring as to whether we are the final perfect species, and whether Mother Nature can do better. I know this is an honest inquiry but to me this segment does seem a bit....flippant; however I will treat it as seriously and respectfully as it deserves and as the asker deserves. If you examine how we behave and even our physiological construction well...I personally don't have the proof to refute any such claims but only this. Do any of us truly think that humanity is perfect? That we couldn't be better suited for...life somehow? In any way physically, mentally, culturally or emotionally? I personally don't believe it is the case and don't see how any could observe us as being perfect, when culture itself changes and we do encounter so many problems just living.
I am looking for actual evidence of this however, the problem being that I have to leave my current writing position at the moment, any that could lead me to this please do, please message me. Further than this I'll be expanding upon this in the next week or so. I'm quite interested in this topic of evolution now.
