What Exactly is "Adult Content"?

If This is Maturity, I Don't Want It!

What exactly is "Adult Content"?

This term shows up in a lot of different places. Sometimes, the alternate phrase, "Mature Content" is used. I have been doing some thinking about these descriptions, and the content that they are used to describe.

According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the word 'adult' means "one that is an adult, a human being after the age 21 (specified by law).

Also, "fully developed and mature: grownup. Of, relating to, intended for, or befitting adults."

Lastly, "dealing in or with explicitly sexual material".

Webster defines 'mature' as "to become fully developed or ripe; or to become due. Having completed natural growth and development, having attained a final or desired state, characteristic of or suitable to a mature individual."

Now why does being an adult, or being mature, mean that we are now ready to read and/or view, pornographic, violent, filth that obviously comes from the minds of those who are not, in my humble opinion, very mature at all?

Isn't an obsession with sex something most adults remember having gone through when they were a teenager?

Many of us recall that time in our lives as rather chaotic, dramatic, and totally crazy! So, when we mature, shouldn't we also mature in how we think about sex, violence, and vulgar language?

I can't help wondering how and when the words 'adult' and 'mature' came to represent the lower nature of mankind. The sex act should be a representation of the love and admiration between two people. However, it is rarely depicted in this manner. Rather, film makers and others like to show the act in ways that are violent and depraved. Why is this so? Are there really that many people who find this kind of thing entertaining? Now to set the record straight, I'm not even talking about the kind of nudity shown in magazines such as Playboy. That seems so tame and harmless when compared to the filth that is so prevalent today. Even Ted Bundy, the serial killer, stated in an interview that he felt his obsession with violent porn had a great deal to do with the person he became. Is this mature and adult? That adult was executed for having murdered an unknown number of young women.

Historically, a nation obsessed with sex is a nation that falls. Check the facts, not the high school textbooks. I am a mature adult, and I don't feel the need or desire for this type of "entertainment". For those who do, well, maybe you should think about WHY you find this entertaining. Maybe a visit to your doctor is long overdue.
