If you are moving abroad to live in Bulgaria you will want to familiarize your self intimately with the ins and outs of the country. Bulgaria is a rather small country that has recently been growing in popularity as a tourist destination. Despite its small size though, it has a lot to offer for expatriates looking to escape from their home country.

It is relatively easy to travel across the entire country of Bulgaria as it is about less than half of the size of the United Kingdom. The country boasts a lot of great scenery including the beautiful beaches along the Black Sea, majestic mountains and small picturesque villages throughout the country side of the country. The scenery and the warm climate are what have made Bulgaria into the growing tourist destination that it has become.

Bulgaria is a former Communist country. Communism disappeared some time ago as has the heavy industry from the country. Food and natural products are the main exports of Bulgaria these days. The food and wine in Bulgaria are particularly great. If you are wonder what type of food you can expect to dine on in Bulgaria you should note that food centers on salads in Bulgaria. Bulgarian salads resemble Greek salads. Some specialties include yogurt, pancakes, honey and pastries.

Bulgaria borders the Danube, which is Europe's longest river. It also has many archeological wonders including the remains of a Roman amphitheater and Thracian tombs.

The main attractions in Bulgaria are its lowest cost of living and relatively low property prices. Bulgaria offers some of the cheapest property in Europe; however property prices are on the rise. Typically the more expensive properties are located along the coast of the Black Sea.

The climate in Bulgaria tends to vary thanks to the presence of the mountains and valleys throughout the country. The northern part of Bulgaria features cold winters and warm summers. Meanwhile the southwestern parts of the country and the Black Sea coast have a mild Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. That being said, you will experience four seasons no matter what part of the country you end up in.

Be aware that earthquakes and flooding are a genuine threat in Bulgaria. There are two major areas that are earthquake prone. They are the area of the North Bulgarian swell and the West Rhodopes Fault. Flooding usually occurs in the low lying areas you will find along the River Danube. The rivers Iskar, Vit, Osam and Struma have all flooded in the past as well.
