What to Feed an Infant with Diarrhea

Alicia Bodine
You will need the following items:

Infant formula
Baby bottle
Pedialyte
Mashed bananas
Apple sauce
Rice cereal

Follow the Steps Below:

Step 1:
Continue to give your infant his formula as you normally would. It is important that the infant drink the formula to stay hydrated. He will also need the nutrients from the formula to get well again.

Step 2:
Feed your infant yogurt if he is over five months old. The yogurt has the good bacteria that your body needs to heal itself. One yogurt per day is sufficient.

Step 3:
Place 2-3 ounces of Pedialyte in your child's baby bottle. Give it to them after each episode of diarrhea. This is in addition to your regular formula feedings. This will help to keep your infant from becoming dehydrated.

Step 4:
Add mashed bananas, rice cereal, and applesauce to your infant's diet if he or she is older than 4 months. Bananas especially will help to counteract the diarrhea. Infants will need their bananas mashed with a little water added in to them. That makes a homemade baby food.

Step 5:
Stay away from fruits and high fiber foods. You don't want to make your infant go to the bathroom even more.

Step 6:
Call the doctor if the diarrhea persists or if your infant isn't eating or drinking in order to stay hydrated. If your infant becomes dehydrated, it is serious. A hospital can administer an IV and give your infant the fluids that he needs that way.

Tips:
Use A & D Ointment on your infants bottom after each episode of diarrhea. Otherwise, the area will become irritated, red, sore, and painful for your infant.

Warnings:
Do not give your infant an anti-diarrhea medication. This can be harmful and will stop the bad bacteria from getting out of your child's system.
