What Are the Financial Consequences of a Loss to an Individual in an Auto Accident?

Evan Nash
Nobody wants to be in an auto accident, in fact, most people spend a lot of time and money to learn how to drive in a manner that protects against an accident happening. However, the sad and hard truth is that most of us will be in one or more auto accidents in the course of our lives. With this truth staring us in the face it is good to know how an accident could possibly affect you and your family. There are a couple of different things to consider about the financial consequences of an auto accident.

To begin with, you will have to pay for the cost of investigating the accident and providing a defense against the other party. In most cases auto accidents will not go to court and will be settled by insurance, but a lot of other cases do go to court. When a case does go to court you will likely need to hire someone to assist with your defense of the accident. This could be covered by your auto insurance, but in some cases it is not and you foot the bill.

Even when you do settle through insurance you are paying for investigation and defense, just in another, more round-a-bout kind of way. You are paying premiums for your insurance, who will investigate and defend you if necessary. Also, an auto accident being reported to your auto insurance will likely raise your rates and make your premiums go up which costs you more again. Auto accidents cost a lot of money, be prepared to part with a lot of cash.

The other way that money is spent or lost due to an auto accident is when money damages are awarded when settled outside of court or insurance. This could be to you being responsible or for just having a poor defense of your side, but regardless, it will cost you some money out of your pocket. When you decide to pay someone for an accident you caused without going to the insurance it is a financial consequence of your loss.

A major auto accident can cause a great deal of grief for individuals and families that are involved in the accident. The possible injuries incurred, the shot to your ego and the loss of financial investments could be the difference between you and the life you want to lead. Having insurance will help to ease the weight laid on you, but it will not prevent the situation completely.
