If you are in an auto accident that caused bodily injury or property damage above a certain dollar amount (varies by local government) you must provide proof of financial responsibility. You could be legally responsible for the accident occurring and if you are you will need to show your proof of insurance to the officer who responds to the scene. You are usually given a proof of insurance card when your policy starts, make sure you keep it in your vehicle so you can show proof at any time.
After having repeated violations that caused the loss of your drivers license, such as drunk driving or reckless driving, you are usually required to show proof of insurance. This will also be a requirement on your first offense for such violations as these are serious enough infractions to endanger the public's well being. Carry your proof of insurance with you on your person or in your car so that you can provide it to the responding officers easily.
If you fail to pay the final judgment to another party after an auto accident you are required to show proof of financial responsibility. This is to ensure that you are trying to make sure the same situation doesn't occur more than once. If you have been in an accident and caused injury or damage without having insurance it will be tough for you to get approved now.
It should be noted that a proof of financial responsibility is not necessarily just an insurance policy, though that is the most common representation. You could provide savings, stock or investment information that could help you become financially solvent to the court's approval. If so, all you then must do is show that you can use this financial stability to make things right with the other party and you will be ok. Paying an insurance policy will protect you and your family from losing your precious life savings.
