What Fireworks Are Legal in Georgia? Safe Fireworks for Home Use

Pyrotechnics Safety for Georgia Citizens

Brenda Vincent
Fourth of July and New Year's Eve celebrations aren't complete without fireworks. But, if you live in Georgia, how do you know what fireworks are legal and which ones are not? If you have a hankering to watch fireworks in the comfort of you own home, here's what's legal in Georgia.

According to John Oxendine, Georgia's Fire and Safety Commissioner, any type of fireworks that explode or shoot into the air are illegal. Legal fireworks in the state of Georgia are: wire or wood sparklers that contain no more than 100 grams of mixture per item, snakes, glow worms, drop pops, snappers, non-explosive sparkling items and non-aerial fireworks that contain 75 grams or less of chemical compound per tube (200 grams total or less for multiple tubes).

The urge to travel to neighboring Georgia states to purchase illegal fireworks is great for some pyrotechnics enthusiasts. Don't do it. If you get caught using or possessing these illegal fireworks in Georgia, it could result in fines of up to $1,000 and a year in jail. If you want to purchase Georgia fireworks, your best bet is Walmart. Officials say that Walmart sells fireworks that meet all state requirements and will not sell pyrotechnics to minors.

Some fireworks safety tips that will save a trip to the emergency room are:

* Wear protective goggles
* Keep a water hose or bucket of water close by
* Make sure fireworks are extinguished
* Keep people and animals at a safe distance
* Never let children handle fireworks of any kind
* Use a lighter with an extender (like those for fireplaces or candles)
* Stay away from houses or dry leaves
* Never put fireworks in plastic buckets or glass containers
* Don't attempt to relight "dud" fireworks
* Do not point pyrotechnics at another person or animal

Fireworks can be a beautiful celebration of patriotism, but they can also be dangerous. The mishandling of fireworks could result in severe burns, blindness, amputation or even death. Be sure to read pyrotechnics instructions carefully and heed all label warnings. As a safe and legal alternative to home fireworks, take the family to pyrotechnic displays near you.
