What is a Fish Surfboard?

Rik Rodriguez
Fish surfboards received their name from their funny fish shape. They were born in the 60s . Someone decided that they would create a surfboard that would catch smaller waves easier. I purchased my first fish surfboard about 5 years ago. I had a custom board made for my height and weight. The surfers named my surfboard the magic board. Because they noticed instantly that I was catching more waves and riding them for a longer period. Fish surfboards have very little rocker they are flat on the bottom. Therefore they move through the water with less effort than a conventional surfboard. They are generally a little bit wider than most surfboards giving them more flotation. The tails on the boards are created in such a way as to make more lift. All these aspects of the fish design help in catching waves sooner and riding them longer.

They are great boards to learn on because they are usually lighter than a long board and you can control the fish surfboard with ease. Because they are more buoyant you may find it more difficult to reach the break but duck diving. But for smaller, sloppy mushy surf, fish surfboards do the trick. Some of the board bags will not carry the fish boards because of their extra width. I recommend that you do your home work if you plan on traveling with your fish board. You may have to purchase a surfboard bag that was made for a larger board.

Choosing the correct board can sometimes be a chore, most surfers and surf shops will not let you test out their boards. They are very protective of them because they can be expensive and for the novice boards can become damaged easily. If you are a seasoned surfer you most likely have paid your dues as they say. You probably already have an idea what type of fish surfboard might improve your surfing.

Safety is the first thing I look for when buying a different board. I want to be able to control the board well enough to stay out of peoples way and not injure myself. So keep that in mind when you are going out to purchase your first fish surfboard. Safety is a big issue when it comes to any sport especially surfing. Always be courteous and respect all people on the beach and in the water. If you respect the other surfers you will have more of a chance to gain respect yourself.
