What is a Fish Surfboard?

Rik Rodriguez
Fish Surfboards have long been the secret of many surfers who seem to catch more waves. This may seem like a bold statement. But coming from a surfer that knows this from experience is different. Fish Surfboards have a distinct shape, hence the name fish. Many of the fish surfboards are shorter and thicker than most of the conventional surfboards people are used to seeing. The Fish Surfboard shape was born out of necessity. As surfing developed surfers wanted to be able to surf any type of conditions that they wanted to surf. If the surf is sloppy and has a poor shape, it can be more difficult to catch a wave on a conventional surfboard.

You need a surfboard with more lift to catch the wave sooner. Fish Surfboards are not only designed to catch waves sooner but they are made to generate speed in the surf. Much of this is accomplished by the design of the bottom of the surfboard. I prefer the v hull on my Fish Surfboards. This type of bottom channels the water to make the surfboard feel like it is really griping on the wave.

A properly designed Fish Surfboard can be sort of wide and thick compared to most surfboards. They tend to float you better than a conventional surfboard. Because they float better they are easier to paddle. I like to think of my Fish Surfboards as long-board surfboards that are shrunk or compacted. I can normally catch a wave close to the spot where a long board can catch a wave. But only if I am on a Fish Surfboard. I can create more forward motion with a fish type of surfboard. I can control it better than a long-board surfboard. I am able to duck dive a Fish Surfboard where I cannot duck dive a long-board.

So by definition Fish Surfboards are the surfboards that allow you to surf better. They allow you to catch more waves. You do not have to paddle as hard to catch a wave if you own a Fish Surfboard. You may be thinking that Fish Surfboards are more expensive than other surfboards but they are not! In fact you can order Fish Surfboards almost anywhere on the internet or from your local surf shop. You will not regret it.
