What to Do With Your Fish Tank the Power Goes Out

Shannon Frye
For all of us, a power outrage is a real pain. For those of us who own fish tanks, it's more of a sudden panic. Some of us have many fish tanks or large fish tanks with large fish. If you have a large fish it can only live for a couple of hours with proper filtration and a bubbler hooked up. When the power goes out many people do not think about those of us who are scrambling and hoping that the power will come back on. The best thing that you can do in this situation is hope that the power comes on soon. You will also want to be as prepared as possible.

You can always purchase a battery powered bubbler which will not depend on the power. You simply place batteries in the battery powered bubbler and hook them up to each of your tanks. At least if you have one of these for all tanks you wont have to worry about the power going out. This might be expensive if you have a lot of fish tanks but it will save all of your fish in the long run.

Never feed your fish during a power outage. It will use up more oxygen when the fish eat. Even though you feel bad for the fish and want to give them extra energy, this will only make the problem worse. Never feed your fish during a power outage. You can add some dechlorinated water to the fish tank which will give them a little bit more oxygen but only do this after about one hour if the power has been out.

You will want to try to leave the fish alone as much as possible because by scaring them you will make them use up more energy and more oxygen. You will want to make the room as silent as possible so that they can conserve their energy. You can run to the store and purchase some battery powered bubblers if you would like to. Another good place to purchase these is from Gander Mountain or a local bait shop. They will run out of them quickly, so make sure you purchase them right away or before the power goes out.

As you can see, having fish during a power outage is a real problem. Perhaps over the next few months you can purchase one or two battery powered bubblers per month so that when it comes down to a power outage you will not have any problems. If it will keep a few fish alive it's worth the money that you spent on it. If you have a large tank you will want to purchase several of these and remember to purchase batteries and spare batteries as well.
