What to do About Fish Tank Evaporation

Shannon Frye
Just like any body of water, your fish tank will evaporate just like the ocean, rivers and stream. It's usually not that big of a problem as long as you keep up on adding water. When you see that the water is starting to evaporate you will want to add some water or do a water change. If the water comes down to the point where the filter can no longer suck up the water you will ruin your filter system. Make sure that you always add water to your fish tank before it comes to the point that the filter is no longer sucking water. This will blow up the motor in the filter system.

If you water comes down to the point where the heater is sticking out of the water one of two things could happen. Either the heater will burn up and stop working or the heater will explode. If you have a glass heater, the heater will shatter into a million pieces and you will have to pick up glass from the floor. Your rock in your fish tank will get covered in glass and your fish will actually try to eat the glass. If the fish eats the glass it will die. You do not want your heater to break or shatter so you will want to make sure that the water is up past the heater so that the heater can continue to work as it normally would.

Filling up your tank will not only become a problem with your filter system and you heater but it will also create a problem when it comes to hearing. With the water lower than it usually is you will constantly be hearing very loud water. The water is louder because it has farther to drop from the filter system. If you fill up the water all the way to the top of the tank you will not be able to hear the water at all. This is how I like it. Most people do not like to hear very loud, running water in the room that they are in every single day. It's somewhat of a nuisance.

Evaporation will happen and there's nothing you can do to make it stop from happening expect for making sure that you have a top on your fish tank. You will need to add water to keep the level of water at where it should be at. You don't want to ruin your heater or your filter system to it's important that you keep adding water to maintain the water level. You will need to do water changes at least once every two weeks so the water shouldn't evaporate that much before you have to do another water change. Keep an eye on the water level to make sure that you dont break your filter or your heater.
