1. Surf the net and look at pictures of celebrities who have had to stroll the red carpet while pregnant. There have been quite a few famous ladies who have had to endure this in recent months -- Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Gwen Stefani, Rebecca Romijn, etc. Take note of what shapes, colors you think worked for them. This will help you find the perfect look for you.
2. Consider that dark colors are considered more formal. (Plus they are more slimming too.)
3. Take an "emotional" inventory. That is, are you feeling more whale-like or more goddess-like? If you're feeling incredibly beautiful, then you might want a dramatic dress that hugs your growing tummy and emphasizes it. There are some stunning ones available now. If you're feeling huge and miserable, you may want to choose an empire-waisted dress or a simple sheath that will help hide your belly.
4. Check out catalogs, websites and stores. Great options are available in all price ranges these days. Some of the more popular stores for maternity clothes are: A Pea in the Pod, Motherhood and Target. Resale and consignment shops are also terrific sources for finding some top quality and unique items.
5. Consider footwear carefully. While most of us enjoy how high heels make us feel sexy, the 8th month of pregnancy is not the time to break out a pair of new towering stilettos. Keep the heel height to a minimum. You might even check out a shiny pair of ballet flats - they are very popular and feminine. (and comfortable)
6. Pick out some fabulous accessories to brighten up your outfit. Glitz and bling are fun and appropriate for formal occasions.
7. Play up dramatic makeup to show off your mother-to-be glow. Accentuate your lips or your eyes. Show the world how glorious you are!
8. Pamper yourself as you get ready for the event. Treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure and/or maternity massage early that day. Treat yourself!
During my 8th month of pregnancy, I was invited to a formal fundraiser. After I recalled how beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones looked when she was accepting her Oscar, I was ready to make the effort to look my best. I found a fabulous black maternity dress at A Pea in the Pod and some fabulous accessories at J.C. Penny. I had my hair and nails done the day of the event. As we mingled at the party, I could see in my husband's face that I had achieved my goal of looking stunning.
