What is Geotagging and How to Use It?

For the Novice, Geotagging is an Unknown and Unused Feature that Could Offer a Lot

With digital camera's becoming such a big part of the family vacations, it only makes sense to use Geotagging. So what is Geotagging and what does it do for the average user? The simple answer is that it keeps track of where your pictures were taken. Of course, most people remember where they took a picture, and many digital cameras already allow a date time stamp on their pictures. How many times have you been on vacation took a picture and seen something you wanted to get back to only to find you were in a different part of the city, then what you originally thought.

That is where Geotagging comes into play, it will allow each user to pull the picture up and see where you spent your day or the city that you already explored. The Geotagging technology offers many possibilities for tourism and even security companies. It can provide a tracking system or just an easy reminder of how to get back to the shop you did not have time to see the day before. Geotagging also allows individual users email their pictures and share where they have been that day with family and friends.

Of course, with any technology comes a down side and Geotagging is no different. First, in order for Geotagging to work you need a camera with GPS capabilities, which then means being able to learn new features. While many of the new digital cameras have GPS, a lot of users still just like the simple point and click of the old days. Geotagging does require a degree of technical knowledge and a lack of technology fears because it will have different software that will need to be installed, and depending on the camera that will advise you of how easy it will be to use for the novice user. Of course, with so many of the camera phones available with GPS today it would only be a natural edition for Geotagging to be made for a mobile application

Geotagging has many great possibilities, although it may not be worth running out today and getting the latest camera just to start using it. With any newer technology, often times it is best to let it become more adaptable before buying that new camera or paying for the extra capabilities. However, if the vacation is coming up fast, get the phone where the technology of Geotagging does work and is ready to go. Just be mindful of when you start shopping to use the most knowledgeable source so you do not find yourself spending your vacation troubleshooting one little problem.
