What God's Word Says About Homosexuality

This article is written in response to Max Power's Gays are Taking Us to Hell? What About Materialism?

The topic of Christianity and Homosexuality is one that almost everyone seems to have an opinion on. People who identify themselves as Christians will often readily state that homosexuality is sin. The vast majority would also say that the increasing acceptance and promotion of homosexuality may be causing God to turn His back on this country.

Obviously, that sounds like a pretty big claim considering all the other sin this country has committed. Mr. Hagen did an excellent job of laying out each of the Ten Commandments and identifying how each area of sin involved with the commandments has been broken numerous times by our public citizens. He continued to point out that the Ten Commandments themselves do not necessarily highlight homosexuality, and that Christians seem to focus on that sin more than any other sin that is commonly committed.

Next, Mr. Hagan pointed out what the Bible does say about homosexuality. He mentioned that the Old Testament speaks against it; however, it seems Mr. Hagan's interpretation is that homosexuality is no more harmful than eating bacon. The author goes on to say that the canonized gospels which include Jesus' direct teaching also do not mention homosexuality, so it must be okay right?

Well, if one chooses to believe in one part of the Bible and not the other, they are really missing the whole point. Yes, the four gospels do contain Jesus' direct life and teaching. It is also true that Jesus may have not specifically mentioned homosexuality. He tended to address sin as a whole. However, in Luke Chapter 16, vs. 16-18, Jesus addresses the Law and the Prophets (which of course includes the Old Testament teachings Mr. Hagan mentioned). Jesus said, "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law."
Explain to me again how all that stuff in Leviticus didn't matter to Jesus?

Of course it did and it still does. Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. (Matthew 6:19)

He has no need to restate the laws. He already knew them well, as did the Pharisees and religious leaders of that time. Please don't think that because Jesus Himself did not directly teach against homosexuality that it is okay with Him.
Mr. Hagen also mentioned that Jesus created a new greater law for humanity. Well, sort of. Really, He offered redemption through His blood and sacrifice, which could only previously be attained by a rigorous set of sacrifices. The law itself did by no means disappear after the resurrection of Christ.

Also, Paul had much more to say about homosexuality in all of His letters to the churches. It is listed as sin several times; perhaps this is because Paul's mission was to help Christians follow Christ and to disciple them, while Jesus' teachings were often for non believers. That is also the most likely reason why sin is addressed in more general terms by Jesus, and more specific terms by Paul.

Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost by restoring sinner's hearts and healing and forgiveness through His death and resurrection. Paul's mission was to make Christ known and to encourage the churches with greater understanding of how to follow Christ fully. It makes sense then that Paul would highlight homosexuality as well as its damaging effects.
Lastly, God's Word is authoritative and unitary. It is ridiculous to break it apart and only believe parts of it. It's like reading the middle of the book without the preface or ending. Second Timothy 3:16 states, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

That's right, all scripture. Not just the gospels, not just the law, and not just Paul's letters, but all scripture.

Where does Paul speak against homosexuality?

  • Gay Person11/25/2010

Listen dude..I was willing to give up everything for God. I was saved and gave up homosexuality. Now Im in a heterosexual relationship completely miserable with absolutely no feelings whatsoever for my partner. Thats real fair genius! Stop being so ignorant and try to put yourself in a gay persons shoes. Its like telling a person they are sinning becuase they are a different color and until they becomes Gods color they are going to burn in hell. Being gay is something you are born with. Its not a choice. trust me if it were I would be straight just so I dont have to deal with Ignorant, Jugdemental Christians like yourself.

Part 2 ...The question is: are we willing to make that choice? If you ask Christ to help you, ask Him to come into your heart and save you, He can and will help you conquer any sin. Now, will we never feel tempted again? Of course not. Every person deals with temptation, especially concerning those sins we are weakest to. Why would homosexuality be any different? I want you to know that I am praying for you, and hope that you can read this and understand what it is I am trying to convey.

@P. Jessie: I hope you are reading this. As Christians, we believe that when you keep a sin a secret, it grows and becomes a part of you more. You keep it in your heart, do nothing about it, and thus allow it to grow. Your parents/family should have never made you feel uncomfortable about discussing your desires or sexuality. That was the main problem. Now, it is a part of your life. I witnessed to a gay friend of mine recently (a proclaimed Christian) and told him how to get saved. I emphasized that, in order to do so, he would have to be willing to give up homosexuality. Prior to this, he had told me that he never chose to be this way, and that if he could be given the choice, he would be straight. However, when I told him about salvation, and how it requires us to give our lives, our sins, everything fully to Christ, including homosexuality, I asked him if he was willing to do that. He said no. We all can make choices, we all have free will.

Part 3...those things that do hurt other people and themselves. But us, gay people, what choice do we have to happy??? None. To stop being gay? To be miserable for the rest of our lives for not being able to express our feelings to the persons we love? I'm sure that there are people out there that have been raised in church like me and they have probably killed themselves because they can't deal with both things.

    Second part...

We started going out, obviously nobody knew anything because of our fear of being rejected by other friends and family members. Soon enough, everything came out to the light, and everyone found out we had been going out as a couple. I really believe in the bible and I believe in everything it says. But I also believe that it is not fair for us who feel attraction to the same sex be punished for just LOVING a person. How much harm can that really do to ourselves or to anyone? Also, please ask yourselves a question, do you really think that us, gay people, choose to be this way? Do you really think that we want to be laughed at, humiliated, abused, KILLED, etc.??? I mean, come one, this doesn't make sense for you guys to say that we choose to act like this or that we choose to be gay. Coming from a christian background, it is really frustrating. Because the other sinners who rob, who kill, who committ adultery and fornication have at least the choice to stop doing

This is a topic/subject that is never going to be understood nor satisfied by our limited minds. I grew up in church, pentecostal/christian church. I was a true christian like you're supposed to fast, pray, etc. What happened was that ever since I was a child (being in kindergarten) I used to tell my aunt "I like that girl." she would respond "No, Jessie, you think she's pretty and you would like to look like her." to what I would respond "No, aunt, I like her." So, since that moment, I felt an attraction to same sex. Now, some people say that people might practice gay behavior while nobody knows and that that's why they come out later. In my case, I never practiced anything. Since I was always told that it was bad and that it was a sin, I was afraid to say anything about it while growing up. I never did anything that had to do with homosexual behavior until I was in high school. That was the first time when I engaged in a homosexual relationship with another girl. We started g

i dont think homosexuality is a sin. if it was, Jesus would have known about the confusion of the topic in the future and would have clarified. i mean really- does anyone seriously think that someone as gay as perez hilton could ever be straight? nahhhh God made him gay and thats that

God is love. He loves us all regardless of who or what we believe we are. He promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us. He is with us always. Whatever you may choose to believe in this life is up to you. God still loves you and cares for you. He shows us this by sending Jesus Christ to bear it all just for each and every one of us. The bible is His word. His way of communicating with us. Not JUST one line. Not one verse or portion of scripture, but the ENTIRE thing!!!! YOU EITHER TAKE GOD BY ALL OF HIS WORD OR NONE AT ALL.
