It's the same question I get every year. And every year I give the same answer.
"I don't know. I'll throw something together."
Which is exactly what I do when Halloween comes around. My closet is my Halloween costume shop. I've gone as "Myself X 2" for quite a few years now. There is always room for more weird. The hair could be bigger. The make up could be darker. The clothes could be stranger. Sometimes it's good to be a goth kid- especially around Halloween. It makes Halloween a lot easier. And if anybody asks, I always say that I'm Lydia from Beetlejuice.
Yet it kind of bugs me.
I don't know if it's because I live in a perpetual state of spooky that makes ideas so hard to come by. When you're daily activities include helping your fiance build a prop guillotine and tossing a stuffed bat at your dog for her to chase, you can safely say you live in a realm of Weird. With spooky and weird being an everyday thing, I think that Halloween is just a day that I celebrate everyday. Ideas for Halloween costumes come every time I get dressed and go out. It's just how it is and how its always been. Why look special for a typical day?
This year I browsed the Halloween costume websites for some sort of idea. I thought this would be a great time to quit being lazy and go out as something other than myself. I didn't like what I found. When did Halloween for females get so skeezy and unimaginative? Sure, I'm not one to talk about the unimaginative realm, considering that I have gone as myself, but "Sexy Aviator Pilot", "Sexy Bumble Bee", or "Sexy Fairy"? I guess if you make a Halloween costume resembling something tiny enough, it can be a "Sexy Whatever". But how many girls are you going to run into that are wearing the same thing? That also goes for the other end of the spectrum, where you can be anything that is zombified or dead. Dead Fairy. Zombie Bumble Bee. Hey, wait, I think I'm on to something... But really. I browsed and browsed and found nothing but Sexy Dead Zombie (Insert Something Random Here) and none of the Halloween costumes made me say, "Hey, I want to be that for Halloween". Not even the costumes that instantly make one goth for the night, which are usually perfect wardrobe additions, made me want to go find the nearest Halloween shop and purchase a costume.
Maybe I've been desensitized to the whole idea of Halloween costume shopping. It could also be that choices for a 20 something woman are slim and show far too much skin for my tastes.
I think I've figured it out though. I'll keep Halloween easy. No costume shopping. No wondering if anybody else is going to be a "Sexy Cop" or whatever. I think I've figured it out after taking one glance at my closet.
I won't be myself- I'm thinking outside of that box.
I'm going as a "Sexy Skeleton". Quick, very little skin showing, weird, easy, and I can wear it after Halloween if I want to.

Post a CommentIf you're ever at loss of ideas, do what I do: Take something mundane and make it awesome... this year I was a bush... (come to think of it, I REALLY should post pictures from halloween on my AC)
LOL!! at Linda! I'm going as the Big Bad Wolf dressed as Grandma!
I'm going as a Republican.
Good for you. I've always thought the most fun costumes are those we create ourselves. After all, we have imaginations, don't we? I hadn't thought about it, but maybe that's my neighborhood, too, weirdville.
