What is a Golf Marshal

T. Jay Kane
A golf marshal is a person charged with patrolling a golf course to ensure that players maintain a steady pace and to help answer the questions or comments of other golfers. Golf marshals also help with crowd control during golf tournaments.

Most golf marshals are volunteers with a love for golf. Most positions as a golf marshal are as easy to get as asking the person in charge of the course you want to work at. Most golf marshals are compensated with free admission into the golf course or a discount on food or merchandise.

One company in Texas, Golf Hole in 1, offers a downloadable e-book devoted to the subject of being a successful golf marshal. The e-book claims to not just teach readers how to land a volunteer job as a golf marshal, but also the rules that govern working as a golf marshal. The cost of the e-book download is currently offered for only $20. The Golf Hole in 1 website claims that reading the e-book can lead to free golf lessons, free golf balls, free golf cart access, and more.

While a golf marshal job is not one that is typically advertised for, some may find that spending $20 for an e-book on how to get the job seems a bit pricey. While the information is no doubt informational and helpful, many consumers may decide to go the cheaper route and call up their local golf course for information on being hired.

While the job of the golf marshal may seem trivial, the position is actually a very good addition to the staff of any golf course. Golf marshals will help reduce the number of complaints or questions that full time members have to deal with. In many instances the golf marshal may even be more than capable of tending to the golfer's needs without having to pull a full time employee away from their assigned duties.

Golf marshals can also be a security multiplier by acting as an additional set of eyes and ears for the security department of the golf course. Golf marshals can report emergencies that happen out on the green and qualified personnel may also be able to perform simple first aid and/or CPR. Golf marshals can also be tasked with policing the course for litter and ensuring that course patrons also pick up after themselves. Considering the fact that most golf marshals work for free it would seem that golf marshals are an excellent investment for any golf course. Any interested person should be sure to include the above listed facts when presenting the idea of adding a golf marshal to a golf course owner that doesn't currently offer the golf marshal position.
