Journal Writing for Home Schoolers
One of the easiest ways to increase your home school students' abilities to write is to give them plenty of opportunities to practice. You can do this by incorporating journal writing into the curriculum for the various subjects that you teach. Journal writing is appropriate for social studies, science, English, foreign language, religious studies and for business classes. The journaling exercises can relate to current events, observations made about reading assignments or general thoughts about a topic that you introduce that relates to the subject that you are teaching.
Essay Writing
Essay writing programs are also important to add to your home school program. This is particularly true if you want your kids to go on to college. Essay writing programs need to start out with basic informational essays and expand to reflective essays, demonstrative essays and critical thinking essays.
Business Writing
A writing program that is not often offered to kids in public schools is business writing programs. These programs will provide your home school students with practical skills that they can use to run their own business or to get a good job when they graduate. Business writing programs will include topics like how to write a business letter, how to write a resume and how to write a business report. You can also work on technical writing skills, instruction writing skills and online communication skills.
Creative Writing
Creative writing programs are an important part of a child's basic education. It provides them with an outlet for their creativity and also gives them the chance to experiment with different types of writing. Most creative writing programs will cover poetry and short stories, however, you can create a creative writing program that also addresses the types of writing that your children are interested in such as screenwriting, novels and even comic books and graphic novels.
Practical Writing
While public school writing programs focus on the basics, they often times forget to teach kids how to complete practical writing tasks. For example, they often forget to cover how to fill out forms, how to write a personal letter and how to complete applications. All of these skills can be added to your home school writing programs.
