What Guys Find Attractive

Jack Oceano
You can't flip through the channels these days without coming across a show titled "What Not To Wear," "Project Runway" or "America's Next Top Model." All these shows geared toward women's fashion; it's enough to make any man's head spin. Yet are they really taking into account what guys find attractive?

Not from what we've seen. In fact, a good many men would group these shows into one large category called "What Not to Watch."

Are these shows really where women learn how to dress? Are these hosts the same folks who told women that it was OK to wear shirts and dresses that make them look larger? Yes ladies, baby doll dresses and empire waisted tops make you look pregnant. My sister-in-law even commented during her pregnancy that her timing was impeccable because she'd just bought a number of these items.

So ladies, if you're looking to attract a man we suggest you start wearing clothes that fit. Now men don't necessarily look at women in short tight skirts and form fitting shirts as long-term material. But men do like women to wear clothes that fit their bodies and leave a little to the imagination. Not too much, mind you.

Let's start from the top. We don't need to see the whole show before we even know your name. Shirts should fit nicely and show off your form, but we don't need to know when you're cold. A V-neck sweater over a button-down shirt is attractive or even a simple tank top or tee shirt. We like simple and casual. It says that you know how to hang out and be comfortable. If a shirt is too busy and complicated with strings and buttons and patterns, we might just get scared off. And then you'll wonder why we didn't call.

Men don't keep track of hemlines. But we know they change every season. If you're looking for a long-term relationship, may we suggest skirts that are at least mid-thigh. If the skirt is too short, we may confuse you with the ladies who charge. Pencil skirts to the knee are quite sexy and leave just enough to our vivid imaginations.

Jeans can be sexy, too. But, ladies, they need to fit right. We don't care to see every bulge. And be careful with the waistline. No muffin tops, thank you very much.

Women need to remember to keep things simple if they're trying to dress to attract a guy. We like clean lines and simple patterns.

And of course, when trying to decipher what guys find attractive, it is always key to remember that clothes don't make the woman. The woman makes the woman.

I found it humorous how you referred to the fashion shows as "What Not to Watch." A lot of times I wonder if these so called new fashions every make it off the runway, and if anyone really looks good in them! You're right, simple is best.

Nice ending. Great advice. I think when women usually get it wrong, they're simply trying too hard. It isn't just men that suffer, women find muffin tops equally appalling.

I can't say that I have ever considered what a guy might think when I was picking out clothes. Perhaps that is just me. It's not that I don't care at all (well, okay...actually I don't, most of the time) but that I need to be wearing something that makes ME feel good, and that's the primary thing. As it turns out, the clothes that seem most flattering to my figure also tend to be the simple lines you talk about here. So, although I find the idea of dressing to please someone else a little strange, the actual clothing types suggested here seem both comfortable and versatile.

Great article. My dad would agree with you about that show grouping that should appropriately be called, "What not to watch." I'll admit that I do watch "What Not to Wear" and similar shows; it's entertaining, although even as a woman I think that some of the outfits the "experts" suggest are ridiculous and not very becoming, to say the least. Anyway, it's nice to hear a guy's opinion on the issue.
