What Happened to Responsible Journalism?

The Media Leads the American Public like the Pied Piper

Diane Green
The American Public seems to hang on every word of the media. They bring us stories filled with fluff and banter, yet we accept it as journalism. What happened to holding our media accountable for quality? It seems that there are only two stories happening in the world today; the War in Iraq and Paris Hilton. Our journalist have grown lazy because we, as a society, are not demanding top quality in journalism. We have been mistaking shock value and sensationalism for news worthy reporting. Where I do feel that the War in Iraq does deserve a daily headline, journalist should be expected to bring us more information than just a body count and President Bush's list of excuses. Paris Hilton, on the other hand, should NEVER be allowed to have another headline. She is an insult to women everywhere. I once heard her publicist refer to her as the Princess Diana of today. There are so many things wrong with that particular statement that I can't even begin to address them.

My friend C.C. Deville, guitarist of the band "Poison," is a recent victim of random media. The website TMZ.com printed an editorial about him and his longtime girlfriend Shannon Malone, expecting their new baby. The article read that they were both happy and excited. It went on to say that they were moving away from LA to raise their child in a more private setting. The truth behind this article is that Shannon Malone wrote it. The only factual portion, is that she is expecting.TMZ.com did not verify the story with Mr. Deville and they went on to print an editorial piece that was both misleading and hurtful. The truth behind the story is this: Shannon Malone is pregnant, she is stating that C.C. is the father, yet he has petitioned the court for a paternity test. Mr. Deville was on tour and was broken up with Miss Malone when she conceived the child. She has moved back to her parents place, in Philidelphia for the duration of her pregnancy. C.C. Deville remains in Los Angeles and has no plans to join Miss Malone in the future. The TMZ.com journalist did not show the American public enough respect to verify their story and print the truth. This is happening everyday and we are allowing it.

It is not only our right to demand honesty and character from our journalist, it is our duty. We need to let the media know that we want to have intelligence brought back into our news. We will not stand for the insulting fluff pieces that they are trying to push off as quality journalism. We live in the greatest nation ,on the face of the earth, we deserve nothing short of integrity from our media.

Apparently this has turned into more of a war between the posters than about the article...which is just crazy! And Kim,in one of your previous posts, you said we all need to get "real lives", yet you've posted the most,so you need to follow your own advise. True or false, the article is still here, and there's nothing we can do about it, so everyone just needs to get over it.

    Brit,
The author opens up by saying that journalists are irresponsible. It's more than just a celeb piece at that point. Because your annoyed that your boy isn't getting great press, you don't attack those who report the facts. When you do, you deserve to get attacked yourself.

Her motive is pretty clearly PR, so it's not really a bad thing for her, now is it?

Whoa, people...good lord! It's just an article! It may not be "hard core" journalism, but these days clebrity talk is considered jouranlism to a lot of people, like it or not.
Now I'm a HUGE fan of CC DeVille...and he was just being used as an example! Some people are trying to make too big a deal out of this and read way too much into it...But with that said, I really really really hope things work out for the best for CC. Just my 2 cents I guess...not worth much I know, but anyway.

    Allison,
    cont'd
real life. Look at the comments section here. It strayed far from the responsibility of the media and went to what the article was REALLY about. People argued about what CC should do and if the girlfriend mom was basically a lying skank. I guarantee you, neither of these people is sitting around saying, "Gee, I wonder if that Kim in Maryland got that job she interviewed for yesterday? If she didn't, she needs to sue and here's why..." They have real lives, so they don't spend a lot of time talking about the rest of us. We should all get real lives.

The main problem I have with this article is that it throws out some catch phrase like "irresponsible media" (which it's not because the writer wasn't a real journalist who studied or worries about ethics, obviously) when in fact, she wanted to complain about how her "friend" (which I don't believe he is) is being treated meanly by a girlfriend. Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

  • Kim Remesch1/8/2007

Allison...She complained that "the media" is preoccupied with Paris Hilton and Iraq...and act like Pied Pipers (sic) and basically tell people what should be important.

I tied this "article" (sic) up with the one that appeared later in which this "writer" (sic) does EXACTLY what she is whining about here. The main point is that something is seriously not adding up here. There's more to this tale, and it has precious little to do with fairness in journalism.

Given that the 2nd article is about someone mentioned in the comments here, at the very worse, it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

I like CC Deville's work and find him entertaining. I don't like people writing gossip about stars. That's my personal opinion. What I know (and again this writer (sic) proved it with the second article) is that writers, mainly wannabes on the Internet, will write about the real or imagined life of stars because so many people DO read it. For a lot of people, it replace

Actually, she didn't say the reporter had no business reporting on her friends private life, the article simply states that supposidly he didn't check with CC DeVille or his management or whatever to see if the story was correct. This is not about not asking about someone's private life, it's making sure you get the facts straight before reporting it.
