What Happens when a Cop Steps Out of Bounds

Another Offbeat News Story from Central Florida

Police Officers are expected to respect the law like everyone else, and to help prevent crime, but sometimes they misuse their powers when something happens in their personal life. This is one of those stories, and it comes from Polk County in Central Florida.

All was normal in the evening of March 7th 2011 in Lakeland, until Deputy Jason Platt who works for the Polk County Sheriff's Office received a phone call from his wife.

She was fuming because she had ordered food from Burger King, and they had given her the wrong order.

So what does the deputy do? He calls another police officer, a personal friend, from the Lakeland police department to assist him, since the restaurant is outside the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's office.

His friend, officer Tammy Hancock, goes to the Burger King restaurant, and when he arrives, Jason Platt is demanding the driver licenses of the manager and the attendant on duty at the drive thru window.

The workers wanted to know why this information was needed, and were told that it was related to the disturbance earlier with a customer, Platt's wife.

Officer Hathcock rightly refused to get involved in the argument, and Jason Platt ended up being suspended for 16 hours.

The offices who was investigating this found that the restaurant manager had offered Mrs Platt a free meal to compensate for the error, but she obviously wasn't happy with that.

Well I guess while this might seem fairly daft to you and I, if you live in some parts of Florida, I guess it's just another day in paradise.

Fast food restaurants hire mostly kids who don't value their minimum wage jobs and therefore don't care to follow the rules. Though I rarely visit them, I've learned to check my bag before leaving the window at every fast food restaurant I visit. In my estimation at least a third of the time my order is wrong.

Unbelievable Tony, then again, some people just don't understand how most of this stuff is just minor and they work themselves up over nothing. Good read, cheers :)

Great article, it appears that this is an on going problem.

Well at least his officer friend was smart enough not to get involved!

There are more important things in life than a meal from Burger King. Maybe the wife should just cook at home - then she could only blame herself if dinner didn't turn out right. Then again, maybe she'd find someone else to blame it on??

    What a jerk.

That's abuse of police powers for sure.
