What Happens in Gym Doesn't Stay in the Gym

The Gym Used to Be a Place of Refuge but 10 Seconds Changed that Forever

It had been one of those days were Murphy's Law reigned supreme ... everything that could go wrong ... did go wrong ... and at the worst possible time.

Not only was I late for an important meeting because of an accident on the Interstate, I got a speeding ticket trying to make up lost time.

I arrived at the meeting 45 minutes late only to find out that the client had entirely changed direction on a TV commercial we'd been working on for the past 3 weeks ... but that he wanted the new commercial I now had to create to air a week earlier.

To make matters worse, our CEO informed me that he was taking a "much needed golf vacation" and that I had to complete some preliminary creative work to run by him before the end of the day.

Needless to say at the end of the day, I needed to seek refuge in the only safe haven I had. A place where I could relax, unwind and escape ... a place "where everybody knows my name" ... the gym!

I quickly suited up and went about my usual workout routine with great vigor and enthusiasm ... so much so that I completed it much quicker than usual ... and I felt revived and ready to take on the world.

Feeling the need to socialize with some of my gym buddies, I went back down to the free weight area where a few of them were engaged in an impromptu weight lifting competition. These raw, ego gratifying displays of muscular prowess were happened regularly and usually attracted quite a crowd of on-lookers and well-wishers. 276

Tonight's category was the "clean jerk" and after my ordeals of the day, this little ritual was just what the doctor ordered. 298

When my turn came, I approached the barbell with the utmost confidence. My testosterone and adrenaline were really flowing and I was totally confident. 322

The moment of truth had arrived. I squatted and cleanly jerked the barbell high over my head. 339

Unfortunately, as I was jerking the barbell up the sweat pants I was wearing decided to drop down leaving me naked except for the jock strap I was wearing.

Everyone laughed and commented more about my exposed anatomy than they did about my accomplishment 368

As I dropped the weight and pulled up my pants, I saw in the crowd my CEO who sometimes worked out there ... and my mother-in-law was taking an aerobics class.

My CEO made sure the right people and the office heard the story Needless to say my mother-in-law told entire family.

It just goes to show you ... what happens in the gym ... doesn't stay in the gym. Maybe I need to go to Mexico to seek refuge.
