What Happens If You Fail to Report a Death Case

Most of us are not aware of the fact that failure to report the death of another person is a criminal offense and may carry a heavy fine, incarceration, probation and court costs, as well as potential felony charges. Anybody who is involved, in any way, with the death of another person should contact authorities immediately to avoid possible charges. At minimum a misdemeanor or other minor charges take time and money to resolve. Criminal charges on the other hand can have a serious affect on a person's life including loss of privacy and freedom for the duration of incarceration, the ability to gain employment or housing, loss of friends and family ties, and of course the financial implications associated with criminal charges.

Any death due to accident, natural causes, or homicide can be traumatic for everybody concerned including family and friends, no matter the age of the person who has passed. While a natural death may be somewhat easier to deal with than a violent death, such as a homicide, family and friends left behind will still feel great loss and sadness. Anyone who causes the death of another by reckless, dangerous or intentional actions is likely to face criminal charges. If the individual responsible fails to report or attempts to cover up the death, they may also face failure to report a death charges.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are facing criminal charges, your best option is to seek counsel from an experienced defense attorney as soon as possible. You always have the right to a fair trial and to defend yourself when charged with any type of crime. When accused of a serious felony the quicker you are able to retain counsel, the better.

When a person fails to report the death of another individual, they may face criminal charges, incarceration, probation, a fine and court costs. Homicides, accidental and natural deaths can all be very traumatic, but it is important to advise authorities immediately, to avoid facing a criminal investigation and possible charges. Any attempt to cover up the death of another individual, be it a homicide or a death by natural causes is considered a serious offense.
