What is the Holy Spirit?

A Brief Overview

Kevin Smith
The Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost, is the most misinterpreted being in the Christian faith. The Holy Spirit is also the most important asset to Christian living. Our misinterpretation of the Holy Spirit is one of the main causes for the abundance of Christians who fail to experience God's true power. Some people don't believe in the Holy Spirit just because they can't see Him, but just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not real. You don't see radio waves bouncing off of satellites or radio antennas but they are there. The Bible clearly states that the Holy Spirit is real so the question is not if He is real, but the question is what He does or what is His purpose.

Many pastors don't even understand what the Holy Spirit is and cause their congregations to also misunderstand. The Holy Spirit is a being or a person per se. He is the third person of the Holy Trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is a personality in the order of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit is our helper.

He is not an emotion. He is not a jumping or a falling. Most of us have been to churches where people get excited and start running around the church or jumping up and down and shouting or crying, and then say that it was the Holy Ghost. The truth is that our emotions are just affected by the presence of the Holy Spirit. I've been to churches where the congregation will make you feel like you aren't connected to God just because you aren't jumping up and shouting or dancing or doing flips across the altar, but they were wrong. The Holy Spirit is not a feeling. Things just happen when He shows up. There is a major difference between the Holy Spirit and our emotions reacting as a result of His presence.

The Holy Spirit is in charge over the affairs of God's kingdom here on earth. Every plan or vision that is revealed from God is given to us through the Holy Spirit. He is our connection to God. According to St. John 16:13, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth, and that He does not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears from God He will speak, and He will tell us things to come. The Holy Spirit is our power or our ability to get results.

We should always expect to get results from the word of God. We don't just read the Bible to make ourselves feel good. We expect to get what it says we can have. The Holy Spirit is our outlet to getting those results. He is the energizer of God's power on earth today.
