What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down

Dawn Fuller
You are driving along the road when all of a sudden your car starts stalling, or you have possibly gotten a flat tire. You are uncertain of what is wrong and pull over to the side of the road. Would you know what safety measures to take in the event that your car should break down?

At the first sign of trouble it is important to pull your car off the road and away from other traffic. If you happen to be on the interstate try hard to head for the exit ramp. Once you have stopped your vehicle it is important to warn oncoming traffic that you are there. You can do this by turning your emergency blinking lights on, as well as turn your interior light on. Also if you have them, use reflectorized triangles behind your vehicle.

If your car is beyond a simple fix, like a flat tire, then you will need to get out. Do not try to flag down other cars. This could be a hazard in many ways. It could cause car accidents and if dark a motorist may not see you and you can suffer injuries. Also in this day and time it is just not safe. There are many people in this world that will take advantage or possibly hurt you if given the chance. Instead lift your hood and tie something white to your car antenna. You can also hang something white out of your window. This will signal to passing police officers or tow truck driver that you need help. If someone offering to help approaches you, only roll your window down slightly and ask them to call the police. Do not get out of your car to talk to the person. You are safer in your vehicle.

Many people carry cell phones today. Once you have done what you have needed to make your car safe, use your cell phone, and call a professional or family member. If you do not have a cell phone the interstate has many call boxes along it that can be used in emergency situations.

It is never suggested to walk on the interstate to seek help. If, however, you are close to an exist and you can walk without jeopardizing you personal health or physical safety, then walk to the exit and the nearest gas station. Only do this as a last resort if no police officer or tow truck has stopped to offer assistance. Make sure that if you have to walk; stay far away from traffic if possible and walk on the right side of the roadway.

If you ever experience a breakdown on the interstate, put your safety first. Be prepared and keep these safety tips in mind in case this ever happens to you!
