What to Do If Your Child is Overweight

Ebie Harris
With childhood obesity on the rise, many of us our faced with the possibility that are children may be overweight. Weight gain is always a sensitive subject. When you add children into the mixture it complicates things even further. Here are some tips on dealing with an overweight child.

Do not approach your child and demand for them to go on a diet. You do not want to send the wrong message and often children (and adults alike) will take offensive if you demand something so personal of them. Instead make weight loss a family priority.

Let your child go grocery shopping with you to pick out healthy foods. First you must set the example for your child to follow. If your kitchen cabinets are full of chocolate rethink your grocery list. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish are great foods to stock up on. If you keep healthier foods in the house then you know your child will automatically choose healthier snacks.

Encourage your child to cook dinner with you. This not only helps your child learn healthy eating habits for today, it sets them up for a healthier tomorrow. If your child is having trouble with proportion sizes dish them out for them. Or you can always purchase smaller plates, true to proportion sizes, and your child can fill the plate themselves.

Exercise together as a family. Spending this time together will reinforce that you are there for them. Make the exercising fun. One night have a game night and exercise together using the Wii.

Help your child to accept their body image. Teach your child about true beauty. Your child may be overweight, but they should still be valued as a person. Emphasize what is on the inside.

During the exercise process praise your child for their hard work and dedication. Reward them with a trip to buy smaller clothes! If the process is going slowly then you may have to be even more encouraging to motivate them.

As your child starts to feel better about themselves this process shall get easier. Remember for those days when things are harder and their self esteem is down remember them of their true beauty.

Make sure as you go through this process with your overweight child you put more of an emphasis on being healthy rather than on losing weight. Your child needs to feel like you are on their side and not against them.

Exercise, healthy foods, a good routine, and the importance of true beauty all play a vital role in the process to losing weight.
