Treating Swollen Gums
If you are not able to get your dog into the veterinarian right away, there are certain things you can do at home to make your dog more comfortable and relieve the swelling. First, you need to check your dog's mouth for any obvious causes of the swelling, such as an injury to the gum or a missing tooth. Be very careful when doing this because your dog may not enjoy it if they are in pain. Give your dog ice water, but do not give them the ice cubes because they can choke. Shaved ice will work also. The cold water will help numb the gums and reduce the swelling, allowing your dog to become more comfortable.
Use pain relievers made for dogs to reduce the discomfort and swelling. Give your dog soft dog food to make eating easier and to reduce further irritation to the gums. Use canned food, chicken baby food, or soak dry food in chicken broth to soften it.
To fully treat swollen gums in dogs, the underlying cause must be treated. An evaluation by a veterinarian will determine what is causing the swelling and the appropriate course of treatment. If periodontal disease is the cause, it will need to be treated. If an infection or injury is the cause, they will need to be treated as well. Get your dog to the veterinarian as quickly as possible to begin the correct course of treatment.
Preventing Swollen Gums
You can prevent your dog's gums from swelling by practicing good oral hygiene. Your dog's teeth should be brushed daily to reduce oral complications. Regular visits to the veterinarian are essential as well to prevent swollen gums.
