What to Do If You Drop Your Cell Phone in Water

Saving a Drowning Phone 101

Heather White
It's an expensive mobile phone's worst nightmare: water. If you spill a significant amount of water on your phone it can damage it but the worst is if it gets submerged or dropped into water. Here are some ideas that may salvage your device.

#1 Try not to panic, even if that's your first instinct.
Yes, this may be nearly impossible when you see $400+ dive into the toilet, mop bucket or sink but try to keep calm. This is especially true if you don't have 'phone insurance', which many people don't bother with. If you are panicking, it's less likely you will be able to think straight and get down to business- the business of cell phone CPR, that is.

#2 If the battery on your phone is removable, remove it as quickly as humanly possible.
Take out the memory or SIM card as well. Take everything apart that you are able to without breaking your phone. Put all parts out on a flat surface and move to the next step.

#3 Get out your hairdryer.
Put it on full blast and fire it towards the pieces to your phone you have laid out. Aim it into any crevices on the phone. Be sure to get the battery and memory card as well. The idea is to evaporate all of the moisture from these parts as quickly as you can.

#4 Keep going- be thorough.
Depending on how much water got into your phone, it may take a long while to get it dry. This means you may be sitting with the hairdryer valiantly zapping the humidity from your faithful communication tool for well over an hour. Be patient!

#5 Try it out.
After you have spent a significant amount of time drying your device, try putting it back together and see how well it works. If it functions, you are in luck. Sometimes there may be irreplaceable damage, such as a certain area on the screen having some water spots or blurry areas. However, if you can use it still, that is what matters when it comes to a super expensive phone.

#6 If it doesn't work...
Take it to your service provider. See if there is any way that you can get it replaced or at the very least have some kind of discount towards a new phone. Be as nice as possible because if you are rude or demanding that will not get you what you need.

#7 Unfortunately, this method doesn't work the same for the Iphone.
A friend of mine dropped hers into water and we were trying to fix it forever but the back doesn't come off unless you have a special screwdriver. It really doesn't come apart. If this happens and you have that phone, I would recommend if you drop it into water you either 1) try to use the dryer anyway. 2) Put it outside in the sun (if it's hot out) or preferably, 3) Take it to your local mobile phone store right away

Well there are your ideas. Another thing to keep in mind is these ideas could work for other electronics as well, such as mp3 players, headphones, remotes and the like.

Good tips. I haven't done this yet and I hope I won't! But it's good to be prepared because I know I'd be upset.
