When you notice that you are failing a class, do not panic. It is best to stay calm and think about all the solutions before you decide to withdraw from the class. If you want to pass your class, it is best to handle this situation as soon as you can and not put it off until it is too late.
The first thing you have to do is understand why you are failing. There may be many reasons, which include:
Spending too much time socializing and having a good time
You do not think you will do in the class
You just do not understand material that is covered in course lectures or find the classes boring
You are poor at managing you available time
You are not feeling good
You are in the wrong field of study
You are taking too many classes
You have an instructor who can not teach
When you notice that you are doing poorly in class, you must act immediately. You will need to do all that you can before the deadline for withdrawing from the class comes.
First talk with your professor. Explain to him as honestly as you can why you are failing his class. Most professors do not want to see students fail. When this happens, they think that they have failed also. He may be able to offer an assignment or two for extra credit.
If the reason you are failing is because you have not been handing assignments in, promise you instructor that you will do better in the future. He may be willing to let you to turn in missing assignments.
If you did not understand the material on the test, he may take time to go over material that you missed.
Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. For example, you may be stronger in English and History and weaker in the Sciences and Math. Take advantage of the tutoring service and hire one. The tutor is not there to take the classes and pass the exams for you. However, he will help you discover what is blocking you from passing and help you address these.
You have to be willing to work harder on your part. If you go to a tutor, listen to him. Follow any advice he gives you. He will be more willing to work with you when you put forth an effort, than if you have an attitude and are playing the blame game.
As a last resort, withdraw from the class. If this course is a requirement for your major, you can always take it again during another semester. At the beginning of the semester, you should be familiar with the deadline to withdraw. If you wait until after the deadline, the chances of being able to drop it are slim to none. Here is one rule of advice if you decide to withdraw and take the class at a later time: Keep any notes that you have taken. You may find that when you retake the class, you will understand it a lot better.
There is nothing to be ashamed of. You are not the first college student who is failing a class and definitely not the last. When you notice that you are not doing as well as you should, get help immediately. Once you have evaluated why you are failing you class, talked to you professor, hired a tutor and improved your habits you may be able to bring your grade up so you do not have to withdraw from the class.
