What to Do If Your Favored Candidate Did Not Win the Election

What You Can Do in the Wake of the Outcome of the Election

Josh H.
The 2008 election has been hotly debated and was preceded by months of hard campaigning by all parties involved. Political commentators and pundits were reporting and debating for months right up to November 4th. Well now the election is past and we have a new president and probably many new congressmen. So what if your candidate did not win? Whether it be on the national or local level, how should you respond to your candidate's loss? If things did not go your way in the recent eletion, here are some things to consider.

Get To Know Your New President, Senator, Mayor, Etc.

The first thing to do of course is to get to know your new representative. What does he really stand for and what does he plan on doing for you and for America. Getting to know your representative is key to developing a strategy for working with your representative to get things done. Chances are your new representatives are very interested in what you want to see happen in America and they want to be the ones to accomplish it for you. But there must be real dialog between you and your representative so that he can know what it is you expect.

Pay attention to the news, internet news sites, and any personal blogs or websites your representative may have to keep up with what he is doing and how his administration is going. In this way you can understand what he plans to do and you can compare that to your own ideals and expectations. If they are not congruous then there are many ways to have dialog with your elected officials and let your voice be heard. Get to know your president, Senator, Congressman, or Mayor and begin to assess the ways in which you agree and also the ways in which you disagree.

Stay Involved

There is a temptation to simply drop out of the political process and simply be bitter. However there is much work to be done on both sides of the aisle. We all want a better, more prosperous nation and so now is not the time to be divisive. Abraham Lincoln once quoted Jesus from the New Testment stating "A house divided against itself can not stand." The words were true with Jesus said them, they were true when Lincoln quoted them, and they are true today.

So stay involved. Begin a grassroots movement in your community that will open up dialog with your fellow citizens and your representatives to put forth bills and policies that reflect the country you want and the ideals esteem as most important. Our representatives are there to listen to us and to work on our behalf but we must not be silent. We must let them know what we expect of them. Furthermore we must educate other Americans. We must roll up our sleeves and continue to make this a great nation and to fulfill the Constitution thereof.

Begin a Grass Roots Movement for the Next Election

The next major election is only four years away. Begin now looking at who you want to back and begin a ground swell of support for that candidate. Politics never stops moving and never stops happening. There is always work and planning to be done for upcoming elections. Begin donating money and resources to candidates who share your ideals and views for America. Talk with your family, coworkers, fellow church goers, and friends about the candidates and issues you feel are important and begin to create awareness in your community. Express the great need for informed citizens and be a part of creating a more educated and involved populous.

The passing of the governmental torch is always an uncertain yet exciting time. It is as though we have been given a new start and new chance to correct things that may have gone wrong in the past. If your candidate did not get elected this time around, your part in the political process has not come to end. On the contrary, it is just beginning. Stand up for your principles and support your new representative when you can and when you can not, then let your voice be heard by dialoging with your representative in a positive manner than will allow him to understand your views. It is not the time for bitterness and resentment, but hard work. Good luck to you and your family these next four years. May God bless America.
