The first thing is what color was your hair to begin with? If it is platinum blonde, depending on the color red you used it will almost always go pink. You want to stay away from vibrate or dark auburns. These colors have violet as an under tone, Color is like science. You have to know the chemical break down of the color you are using to ensure you get the color you want. On platinum hair you want to use a brown red your hair is made up of the basic color chart red, blue, green, yellow and you have to put all of those colors back into the hair. So a brownish red has blue undertones that will counter act the violet that tends to go pink.
If you have brown or sandy blonde hair and never have colored it before you shouldn't have this problem. Most of the time in this case it is because the person has bleached, highlighted and then recolored. Even though they see brown hair and it may look healthy it is not. This is how people make their mistake the damage is still there just covered up. So when they put a violet over it, it will grab the damaged area and turn it pink.
When buying store bought color you will always take this risk. Thier color is not made like professional color. We use what is called a filler this product is put on the hair first to fill in any damage were the pink might want to grab. If you must do it yourself at least go to a beauty supply store like sally's. You won't be able to buy professional products but they have products built more like ours. You can also buy the filler your self.
If you have already turned your hair pink the filler still works, just throw on a hat and go buy it. Then once you have filled your damage you can recolor and it should be close or exactly what you want. If not the only other option is to color it brown to cover the pink.

Post a CommentThanks so much! it makes so much sense to me now - my roots were dark blonde and my lengths were light blonde, so when i dyed it red it went red at the roots and pink at the lengths :P at least i now know why! im off to sallys to get some good dye :)
I had a dark Red in my hair and wanted to change it to a Light Copper...Now it is a Coppery color with alot of Pink...how do I get RID of the Pink?
I also had a pro color my hair and it is streaked pink. I had blond hair and it was dyed brown by the pro with red highlights. Unfortunately, the highlights are pink, not red. I bought brown hair dye and will try to fix it myself tomorrow.
Stay away from dark auburns, use a brown red instead, you say. But isn't that what auburn is??
THANKS FOR THE TIP!!! I THINK I AM OFF TO SALLYS TO BUY SOME BROWN DYE. MY HAIR HAS GIVEN ME NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS THE PAST FEW DAYS. THE BAD THING IS I DID HAVE A PRO DO IT AND IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP. FIRST OFF I HAVE NATURALLY DIRTY BLONDE HAIR WITH A FEW LIGHT BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS. AT FIRST WE WERE GOING TO JUST TUCH UP THE ROOTS WITH A BLONDE PRO DYE. IT TURNED MY HAIR BRASSEY. TWO DAYS LATER WE TRYED DOUBLE FUSION BLONDE WITH A FEW DARK LOW LIGHTS. STILL BRASSEY!!!! SO WE DECIDED TO GO BACK TO MALLEYS AND BUY SOME BROWN HAIR DYE AND JUST DO THE EXTREME AND GO DARK. WRONG IDEA.... WE PICKED UP BROWN RED AND NOW I HAVE BRIGHT RED / PINK/ PURPLE HAIR.... AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! THIS TIME I AM GOING TO TRY AND DO IT MYSELF. NO MORE PROS FOR ME.
THANK YOU! I just turned my hair a shade of lavender pink (but only in some spots!). I had highlighted hair that was beach lightened, tried for a what was supposed to be a neutral dark blonde, answered the phone after only putting it on the front of my hair, 15 minutes later, spaced out.. started timing from that point.. and voila! I look like a suburban punk mom. While it's a fun idea, if i go punk, i'd like it to be a bit more dramatic than that! Thanks for the tips! Off to the beauty supply store.
Whoa, i have brown hair, and i put blonde over not the brightest and now i put that manic panic cotten candy pink colour, and i am curious if it will work ;O
my hair turned green once from the clorine in my pool right after I had it highlighted..what a mess....thanks for the great article
Well written, but if my hair turned pink, I'd probably really freak out. LOL.
