What is the Importance of Updating Your Computer Hardware's Driver?

Aaron Tadeo
Have you ever wondered how your computer hardware works? When you press that button on your keypad or turn your video camera on, how does it communicate with your computer? More importantly, how are you able to use its functions? This is where computer hardware drivers come in. They allow your hardware to communicate with your computer through your applications and operating system thus serving its purpose or function.

Drivers are usually included when you buy computer hardware such as video cards, motherboards, gamepads, printers, scanners and so on. It's usually in a CD or a DVD. Or, you can actually visit the website of the computer hardware manufacturer and download the drivers from there. They offer updates or revisions to drivers but why is that? Why is it important to update your drivers? Let me share some of the stuff I learned.

Errors and problems can occur anytime especially when it comes to computer hardware. During production, unexpected errors may occur and a driver update may be able to address the issue. If your hardware isn't working the way it's supposed to but the hardware is just fine and you've followed the instructions carefully and completely, contact your manufacturer and a driver update may fix this.

Drivers handle the communication between the software that's using it and the hardware itself. Driver updates may improve the instructions making it more effective in terms of processing and probably its response when interact with the hardware. In video games, this may result in faster frame rates and better graphics quality.

Sometimes, the operating systems and the applications receive their own update that may affect the hardware you are using or they may even change entirely. Driver updates should fix this issue so that there will be no problems in using the hardware in that particular operating system or program.

When it comes to networking, however small or large the network is, security is of utmost importance. Communication devices are susceptible to security breaches and bugs that those malicious users may take advantage of. Again, driver updates may be able to prevent this scenario.

If you are quite familiar with computer hardware you may notice some hardware devices that are having problems or conflicts with specific computer specifications. Let's say that a computer has a certain type of processor, motherboard, video card, etc. There is a chance that a hardware you have bought may be incompatible with the computer. Driver updates may be able to fix this but most of the time, you really need to replace the hardware with a compatible one. This, at least, has happened to me a few times and hopefully, the solution is the former.

Basically, updating your hardware's drivers should be able to improve its performance in speed, quality or both. It should also take care of some bugs that are preventing you from using the hardware effectively. So if you've installed your hardware and the driver that comes with it, it doesn't end there. Check your manufacturer's website to see if there are any updates as some of them may be critical.

Good point.... an area often overlooked by folks when using gear that does not automatically signal when driver updates are available and needed. There are programs, including some freeware ones, that will perform this scan and keep everything up to date.
