What Incoming College Freshmen Should Anticipate

Now that you have passed the big test of enduring four tough years to make it through high school, you have a new challenge ahead. You are about to start being a freshman in college. Before you take your first course, there are things you should know. You will learn what you should anticipate during your first semester in college.

A Friendly Atmosphere. Did you encounter silly kids and bullies in elementary, middle and high school? The people who attend a university are mature adults who are serious about their education.

A Huge Academic Challenge. It is much harder to get good grades in college than it is in high school.

A Golden Opportunity to develop Good Relationships. Your classmates are likely to be good people who will accept you for who you are; therefore, it should be easier than ever for you to form great friendships.

The Necessity to buy Books for your Courses. Is it correct you have always had your textbooks provided for free? Well, those days are gone. You will probably have to purchase all of the books for your courses from now on.

A Chance to get Money back for your Books. Universities usually let you sell your books at a percentage of the price you paid for them at the end of the semester, especially if they are in good condition.

The Lack of Homework. Were you bombarded with homework before now? You will not likely have that problem anymore. I rarely had any homework in college.

A Need to take Good Notes. You will have difficulty remembering what you learn in class without writing down what the professors say.

Learning you are on your Own. It is up to you to take charge of your education and do everything you are supposed to do - the professors are not likely to get after you about it.

The Need to become acquainted with the School's Services. You will probably need to use the tutoring labs and other special resources.

Getting a Course Syllabus. You are likely to get a syllabus for each class that outlines what you will work on as well as the quizzes you will take on specific dates.

Not getting any Slack. You will have to study hard and efficiently; furthermore, you should have a lot of term papers and tests to take including midterm and final exams that can make up a big percentage of your final grade.

Zero Tolerance. Professors do not tolerate things such as silliness, tardiness, disruption, sleeping in class, etc.

You have learned what to anticipate in your first semester in college.
