What a Jersey Girl Thinks of "Jersey Shore"

What the MTV Show "Jersey Shore" Says About New Jersey

Jane Meyer
The MTV show "Jersey Shore" is the new hot topic in New Jersey, in newspapers and at water coolers. If you have never visited New Jersey, otherwise known as "The Garden State", and the only references you have of our state are from television, how would you define us? Mix in "The Sopranos", "Real Housewives of New Jersey" and the new MTV hit show "Jersey Shore", and what do you get? A state full of mobsters, table throwing, spoiled housewives (including Carmela Soprano) and young nubile self-proclaimed guidos and guidettes.

"The Sopranos" was fictional and loosely based on generations of mafia movies such as "The Godfather", "Goodfellas" and "Donnie Brasco". "Real Housewives of New Jersey" is a reality show franchise which shows similar housewives in locales such as Orange County, California, Atlanta and New York. So we can't say that the New Jersey housewives are typical only in New Jersey.

But what can we say about "Jersey Shore"? "Jersey Shore" is a reality show about young men and women of Italian descent spending a summer at the Jersey Shore in a beach town called Seaside Heights. Oh, the outrage from New Jersey citizens.

Everyday an op-ed piece shows up in the state and local newspapers about this controversial show. I am a lifelong New Jersey resident and am sad to see New Jersey portrayed in this manner. As a kid, my parents took us on day trips to the very same beach that's on Jersey Shore, Seaside Heights.

Seaside Heights used to be a family beach. I recall a wide, sandy beach with an old-fashioned boardwalk. I enjoyed the boardwalk's kiddie rides with my brother and sister.

Not all beaches and towns in New Jersey swell in population with young, partying "Jersey Shore" types each summer. According to the 2007 census (www.census.gov), New Jersey ranks second in the state listings of per capita income. We also have beautiful, quiet suburbs and tasteful, family beaches such as Long Beach Island and Wildwood Crest.

Although "Jersey Shore" is a "reality" show, the casting call from MTV specifically asked for "loud and proud" Italians who were good looking. This show was meant to showcase the stereotype of young Italians.

Truthfully, I enjoy "Jersey Shore" and was hooked after poor Snooki was punched in the face. Who can resist such suspenseful trashy drama? New Jersey's reputation and how out-of-state Americans view us is beyond my control. So I won't worry about it anymore and can finally watch the show without guilt.

I am from jersey too, born and raised here all my life. I don't watch shows like Jersey Shore and the Housewives of New Jersey because those shows are not a fair representation of the people that live here in the Garden State. We are not all crazy table throwing gangsters.
the show is dumb and i think it downs Italian new jerseians. I like the people in my state and i feel MTV should create a show that gives us a better view of New jersey people

Jersey boyz and girlz, it's time to own up to the truth about your hood.

Linda, Magro is an Italian name. So are Sorrentino, DelVecchio, Giancola, and Guadagnino, and as far as I know, only Snooki was adopted, so that makes everyone except her and jwoww and possibly Angelina at least part Italian. There are millions of us Italian-Americans - it's not too hard to find a few idiots.

    JERSEY SHORE IS THE SHIT!!!

Trash "reality" show that has nothing to do with reality. Italian Americans? Jenny Farley, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Jolie Pivarnick. These are Italian names? Little Snooki has an Italian last name but is Chilean, not Italian. And the others with Italian names I suspect if investigated further are not Italian. No self respecting, decent Italian would embarrass his/her heritage this way.

Secondly, 7 of the 8 cast members are imports from New York (Bronx, Long Island, Staten Island) and Rhode Island. Only 1 girl is from Jersey.

Viacom/MTV - stop hijacking my State and beautiful Italian American heritage, with your BOGUS trash TV. People need to boycott this dishonest and exploitive show.

My best friend lives there now, she says many people in NJ are embarrassed by Jersey Shore but I love the show.

Great article! I used to vacation at the Jersey Shore as a kid (I live in Los Angeles) and it is still one of my fondest memories at 32. :)
