What Jewelry to Wear to a Job Interview

Jewelry can be a fashion statement, it can have meaning but there is one thing that is for sure! It has its places - and there are places that it should not be. When dressing for a job interview it is important that jewelry be kept to a minimum. Although jewelry can add to an outfit, and give that complete look, one has to be very careful when dressing for a job interview to make sure they look completely professional.

What jewelry should men wear to a job interview? The truth is that men should wear as little as possible jewelry if they can't avoid wearing it at all. A wedding ring or chain under the shirt is appropriate, as is a fantastic watch. Anything else could give the impression of cheap or high-maintenance employees. Too much jewelry is unprofessional, and this is not the impression that one wants to give when applying for a new position with a new company. According to many experts men should avoid all jewelry (especially earrings) unless it is a wedding ring, class ring, or metal watch.

For women, the rules are a little different. Women use jewelry in a larger form than men to emphasize the ensemble and women's jewelry seems to be more subtle than that of men. Any jewelry that interferes with the ability to focus, function, or that creates a distraction should be avoided. This includes large jewelry, overtly bold or colored jewelry as well as multiple pairs of earrings. One pair of earrings is appropriate to wear to a job interview; any more could become distracting, or unprofessional.

Ensure that the styles of jewelry chosen are conservative, neutral and not offensive. Logos should be avoided, as should large items on the fingers or wrists that may interfere with paperwork, or the shaking of hands. All pieces of jewelry should come together, match and blend as best as possible and compliment the ensemble with ease. After all, the whole point of jewelry is to add to the outfit, not to take away! Especially during a time when appearances mean so much.

Body piercing is another topic that we should discuss. Many workplaces have policies regarding body piercing that are visible to the public. They may have to be removed if possible during work hours, or covered (if possible). In many cases, and extreme body piercing may hinder one from obtaining the job that they desire. Eyebrow rings, lip rings, labrets - beauty mark piercing - all of these things are difficult to remove and therefore it is important to make smart decisions regarding the form of art that you choose to display. It is important that any issues with piercing be discussed during the interview so that the potential employer knows the limitations on removal of the body piercing.
