What Should You Do when Your Job is Threatened?

What to Do If You're About to Lose Your Job

You'll never know for sure how to react when your job is threatened. I won't suggest to you any miraculous recipe generally available, especially as there are various situations in which it is the best to adopt one or more specific attitudes, different from case to case. You should rather reflect and realize a number of similar examples that can inspire our own experiences.

1. My salary was reduced

Here are some useful suggestions:

- Ask as many details about the reason of this decision and ask for a clear feedback about your performance from the most recent period;

- Get information about other activities you could do to increase your work efficiency and get involved beyond the usual responsibilities (e.g. in activities that consist in promoting and signing new contracts);

- Discuss to your direct superior about a new bonus option depending on concrete results.

2. I was announced that in my department will take place personnel reductions;

- Ask about the criteria considered for stuff selection;

- Evaluate your performance and the feedback related to it, in order to know how appreciated you are at work;

- Read the news about the most affected work places and activities;

- Prepare a second plan, as you don't know how sure is your job (identify on the market other available work opportunities for you);

- Increase your connections on the market by developing the network of your own professional relations;

- Find out more about other types of collaboration in the company (e.g. as a consultant, as an employee transferred to another department;

3. I was assigned to work part time;

- Get involved in the free time in finding creative solutions not just for your job, but for the rest of the team;

- Launch your own project, which can prove that you are able to bring new results that deserve to be rewarded now or in the near future;

- If your need of financial stability doesn't allow you to postpone immediate gains, find inclusive collaborations outside the company, which can increase your income (translations, sales);

The most important thing you can do, regardless of the situation, is to be creative and proactive in what you do! Good luck!
