What Judas Has in Common with Many Modern Politicians

Give to the Poor, but Keep for Yourself

Brooke Lorren
Judas Iscariot is one of the most infamous characters in the Bible. He is best known for being the disciple that betrayed Jesus, but there was more to him than just that. He also took care of the disciples' money bag. While reading John 12 today, I discovered that Judas has a lot in common with some of America's politicians today: he wants to tell others to give their money to the poor, yet didn't think that the same standards applied to him.

Mary is Criticized for Giving to Jesus

The story that struck me is located in John 12:1-8. Mary had saved up a great deal of money and purchased some ointment with it. She poured the spices all over his feet. Judas, seeing her extravagant giving, criticized her, saying that she should have sold the ointment and given the money to the poor. The Bible tells us that Judas really didn't care about the poor: he was in charge of the money bags, and he had been stealing from the treasury. Had she given the money to him to donate, there would have been more money for him to embezzle. He was greedy and selfish.

American Politicians Today

Judas seems to have a lot in common with some American politicians today. They ask us to give a lot of money to the poor through welfare programs, foreign aid, and subsidies through our taxes. They ask us to make sacrifices by buying small cars, using inefficient low-flow toilets, and by using less energy, but often live in large houses and fly around in private jets that most people couldn't even afford. President Obama needed two private jets to take his wife and staffers on vacation. Several people in the Obama administration have gotten into some trouble over tax avoidance - all while making sure that normal people pay theirs. They tell us to "spread the wealth around" while at the same time going on multiple vacations in a single year and hiring rock stars to play at their parties.

Do these politicians really care about the "little guy"? In many cases, it seems like they do not. One of Obama's favorite groups, SEIU, was filmed giving advice to a couple pretending to be looking for tax advice while running an underage prostitution ring. Corruption can be seen when politicians award contracts to their friends or to people that can reward them in the future. When there's money involved, a lot of our politicians don't seem to be perfectly honest.

Hypocrisy at its Finest

Both Judas and many American politicians show a great deal of hypocrisy. They both criticize the way that somebody else spends their own money. They both tell others that they should be doing good in some way, whether to the poor or to the environment, but don't always follow their own advice. It didn't really turn out well for Judas. Let's hope that our politicians learn better before it is too late for them.

  • Judas criticized Mary when she spent a great deal of money on Jesus Christ.
  • Although Judas said that Mary should give to the poor, he was only hoping to line his own pockets.
  • Many politicians today do the same thing.
Judas ended up hanging himself. There is one theory that he might even be the Antichrist.

Brooke, this was an interesting comparison. I never thought of Judas that way but now that you mention this - I do see the similarities! cheers :)
