What to Keep in Mind when Selecting a New Power Wheelchair

Jennifer Burss
Millions of people with disabilities rely on power wheelchairs to live their daily lives. Power wheelchairs can cost tens of thousands of dollars. I have used various types of wheelchairs my entire life due to having cerbral palsy and needing to use a wheelchair full time. Options are endless when choosing a new power wheelchair. There are a few important things to remember when selecting a power wheelchair that will make the process easier and thereby more tolerable.

The most important step when ordering a new wheelchair is knowing what your insurance covers. Preparing for what your insurance will require ahead of placing in your request will be helpful in avoiding as many delays as possible. Acquiring your new power wheelchair will more than likely require a visit to a doctor and a few visits with other medical professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, or home care nurses. Be aware and prepared for potential co-pays, these can range from nominal amounts to hundreds of dollars(possibly thousands)depending on the differences between the need of the individual and what insurance will cover.

When you are seeking to select features for your new power wheelchair you will have to contact an orthopedic equipment vending company. As with any company you may do business with it is always a good idea to get a minimum of two references and preferably check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has a good record of dealings with their customers.

When you make an appointment with the equipment vending company it may be a good idea to write down any questions you may have in advance of the appointment and ask them during the appointment. It is also a good idea to wear comfortable clothing in which it is easy to move. Your body's range of motion and flexibility will be examined so that different features can be considered for your new chair. It will be a good idea to bring a personal assistant to help you transfer to another seat if needed.

Extra features such as backpacks and custom painting are most likely not covered by insurance. These extras can also range in price but custom paint work can also run into the hundreds of dollars. In general things the are exactly customized to an individual may not be entirely covered without extensive medical documentation. Getting a new power wheelchair can be very complicated. Hopefully , this information will help make the process easier.
