What Kinds of Articles Get Low Page Views on Associated Content (Yahoo!Voices)?

Also Known as YCN or AC

Rena Sherwood

Page views are the way a writer or content producer makes money on Yahoo! Contributor Network's Yahoo Voices (known as Y!CN but mostly on the Internet as AC from its old name, Associated Content). Although occasionally AC will give up-front payments for special assignments or as a sign-on bonus, getting up-front payments should never be relied on. Getting page views is the only reliable way to earn money on AC.

But your time is valuable. It makes no sense or cents to bang away at an article for a half hour, publish it on AC and then have it ignored. There are some types of convent on AC that just do not generate enough page views to justify writing. These are creative writing pieces, old news and reviews of material that has not been recently released.

Creative Writing

Categories under creative writing include poetry, short stories, novel excerpts or chapters and memoirs. Many people on the web have a short attention span. They aren't looking for the sequel to War and Peace they're looking for a specific bit of information. For many people, reading for relaxation means lying down on a couch or a beach chair instead of in front of a glaring computer monitor flanked with banner ads.

Poems might generate a few pennies a month, but only if you are willing to post a lot of comments (known as "PV love") to other poets on AC. They are then somewhat obliged to look at your poem. They don't have to read it carefully. All they have to do is stay on your page for a split-second in order to generate a page view for you. Doing publicity on AC like this does take up a lot of time. You can also Twitter, Facebook or StumbleUpon a link to your poem, but that will not guarantee any page views like PV love from other AC writers.

Old News

News stories, especially celebrity gossip, can suddenly generate dozens or even hundreds of page views overnight, but when the news gets old, which only takes a few days, the page views drop to zero and tend to stay that way for the rest of the time you have an account at AC. In that limited time, you have to Twitter or do other social networking promotion in order to make the most of your limited time span for a live story.

Also, resist the temptation to write an article on a medical study or obscure weird news story that was published five years ago. Sure, you may be all fired up about it now but no one else will be. Reviews of Movies, Books and Music

This is similar to news. If you can get a sneak peak or advance copy of the book, DVD, film or CD before it is officially released, and then AC will offer an up-front payment for the review, provided you are the very first writer to submit the review. If not, too bad. Its first come, first paid at AC.

Books, music tours and CDs and movies that have been released with in week of the official release date will generate many page views in the same way that news items will. But after a few days, public interest in these new releases wanes and so do the page views. Sometimes if a popular musical artist releases a new CD and then there may be an upsurge of interest in that artist's back catalogue and that may cause a few more pennies to be added to your performance payments. But this interest only seems to happen for a couple of months after the newest piece of merchandise has been released. Then the page views drop like a rock.

When I'm in the mood to make some cash writing vs. editing, I submit the articles likely to earn the most the first half of the month. Others go into the second half.

It often amazes me what gets the most views - sometimes I am surprised at what gets hit more often than not! cheers ;)
