What You Should Know About Bleeding Gums

Darlene Zagata
Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? People who suffer from bleeding gums may avoid brushing their teeth for that reason. But not brushing your teeth can lead to more problems such as decay. Gums may bleed for several reasons. In this article we will examine the possible causes of bleeding gums and treatment options. Bleeding gums can result from something as simple as brushing too hard or something as serious as periodontal disease. Bleeding gums may be caused by the following:

Infection

Gingivitis

Brushing too hard

Hormonal changes

Certain medications such as blood thinners

It is important to make your dentist aware of bleeding gums since it may be a sign of periodontal disease which requires early treatment in order to prevent tooth loss. If bleeding gums are caused by something other than periodontal disease your dentist can help to determine the cause and proper course of action.

There are certain steps that you can take to prevent bleeding gums. Try using a soft bristled toothbrush. If you are a smoker try to quit or at least cut down. Smoking aggravates bleeding so it is best to avoid smoking. Aspirin thins the blood. Avoid aspirin unless it has been recommended by your physician. If your physician has told you to take aspirin for a health condition continue to do as your physician recommends. Inform your dentist that you take aspirin as directed by your physician. Always get your physician's permission before making any change to your normal routine.

Bleeding may be a side effect of other medications. Always inform your dentist of any prescription drugs that you take on a regular basis. If bleeding gums persist consult your physician to see if it could be a side effect of one of your medications. Your dentist may also be able to provide you with information regarding medication and bleeding gums. If you continue to experience bleeding gums your physician may suggest a change in diet or a vitamin supplement. If you wear dentures or a partial denture and experience bleeding gums your dentures may need to be adjusted. Dentures that do not fit properly may cause bleeding gums.

Although bleeding gums can cause mild discomfort don't avoid brushing your teeth. You need to take proper care of your teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. Use less pressure when brushing to lessen the chances of bleeding. Consult your dentist and follow his/her advice.
