What You Need to Know About Business Mentors

Melissa Hon
Many people start off by falling in the footsteps of someone who is in the same business, and has been a success. These people are known as a mentor. They're like a teacher who will guide you towards success or teach you different methods, and share with you their experience as to what works, and what doesn't. Most importantly, they'll share with you the reason behind it. Having a mentor will make life a lot easier for you as they will look out for you, and teach you.

A mentor can be anyone. It can be someone that you already know like a relative or a friend who is already in the same business as you. You may also want to participate in some entrepreneurship programs that are in your community, which will help find you a mentor to help you out. You may want to find a mentor who your parents know or you may want to ask around for someone who is kind enough to be a mentor to you.

It is important to take advantage of what your mentor has to offer. After all, not everyone is willing to share his or her experience, and successes. Generally, your mentor is someone you can ask questions to as well, and visit in a weekly or monthly basis for help. It is important to keep the communication going, and the relationship open. Keep in mind too that you should also ask them how they're doing and be friendly. It's not very nice to only phone them and talk to them when they need help. Lastly, show your appreciation by sending them a thank you card or giving them a gift once in a while.

You can never have too many mentors, and many people will look track and look for more mentors. Don't be shy. There are many mentors out there who are willing to talk to young entrepreneurs as well for your thoughts, and fresh ideas.

So, how do you approach a mentor? You may want to consider looking for a mentor just by calling them up, and ask if you could have a couple of minutes to ask them a couple of questions. More than likely, they'll agree to slot in half an hour to answer your questions. Show them an interest in their business, and experience, and you'll be surprised by how much you'll learn. It is important to keep in mind that mentors are busy people too with their own lives and businesses. It is ok to call them once in a while to ask them some questions, and how they're business is going; however, don't expect them to be at your call to solve your problems because that is not what a mentor is.

Mentors are a glimpse to success as they have already walked the road that you have right now. There is so much to learn from them, and best of all, while discussing with them, you'll get a lot more different ideas sparking in your head. Many successful people have had mentors in their life to guide them through the right direction.

You can look for mentors by calling successful people, and asking if they will lend you a minute of their time to answer some questions. Most of the time, they'll try to spend some time with you, and guide you to ways of success.
