When your computer is malfunctioning and you need it checked out this article is for you. There are some things you need to know about having your computer serviced. Whether your computer is in warranty or not makes a difference on where you take it and your repair costs.

Warranties differ not by just length but also of coverages. Some warranties do not have in home service so in order to get it serviced you have to take to a repair center or ship it to the manufacturer. If you own a laptop and you have cosmetic or have an accident and you don't have accidental coverage you may have to pay to get it repaired. One quick tip if you ever have to send your laptop in for servicing keep the original box and packing. Most repair places want it shipped in its original packaging.

In home support usually covers hardware malfunctions. If your problem is software related you have two choices. You can take it to a repair place or they can walk you through your issue on the phone. Software problems usually are solved by uninstalling and reinstalling the software. The in home support is activated once the phone support technician determines your problem is hardware related. He will than dispatch a technician with a replacement part within a few days. When it comes to hard drives if they are preloaded than fine. If they are empty of data he will not install anything but the OS. You must install any other programs yourself.

If you don't have in home support than you must take it to a service center. They will determine your problem and consult with you before making the repairs. This process can be as long as a week depending how backed up they are. When you take your computer in you must sign release and be sure to discuss and possible loss of data with the technician. Some problems are fixed do to virus or other software related issues. To fix these it may be necessary to reload your hard drive. Make sure you understand the implications. Its best to back up any data before you take it in. If the repair center does any backups for you it will not be covered under your warranty and will be charged. This can cost around anywhere from $50 to $100 for a flat fee or so much per hour to do the job. Its the repair centers responsibility and yours to understand any charges that are not covered under your warranty.

Out of warranty repairs can run anywhere from $50 to several hundred depending on what the problem is. You can get someone to come to your house whether you have in home support or not but this service is not free. There are several outfits like Bestbuy that have technicians that will come to your house. Keep in mind that they will charge a fee just for coming out. Any further charges are determined by the work that needs to be done. Depending on your schedule and the hassle of taking your computer in for service this could be a good option.

Unless your tech savvy hardware related issues you should leave to the technicians who are trained to deal with these issues. Software related issues can be solved quickly just by uninstalling it and reinstalling. This way you can save some money cause most techs will just reload your software anyway. They find that this is the quickest way to solve most issues.
