What to Know Before Your First Ballroom Class

Lori Voth
If you are interested in pursuing a hobby (or according to some, a true artistic sport) in ballroom dancing, one of the first efforts you should make is to familiarize yourself with this broad world that is encompassed by the many facets included in this on-your-feet social past time.

Many people think of Ballroom Dancing and they have a preconceived image in their mind, usually one they've ascertained involuntarily from exposure to traditional and rather formal celebrations, often of a prestigious affectation as is so often depicted in century specific classic films.

What many people do not know, however, is that there are a great many styles of Ballroom Dancing, all with their own unique dance steps, with varying levels of difficulty and most importantly, with such a large selection of social dancing styles out there, there is pretty much guaranteed to exist a complimentary Ballroom Dancing style for any person and or couple interested in social dancing.

If interested in social dancing, it is highly suggested you do some general research online or a similar source or otherwise visit a social dancing hotspot or learning center to get a real live visual of what to expect. Don't get me wrong it is not to say you should check out social dancing as a means to tread carefully and possibly avoid something too tricky.

No no no that is not what I mean to suggest at all. Instead, I simply believe that due to lack of prior research, many enter the world of Ballroom Dancing without ever even realizing those certain styles and techniques, (ones, at that, which very well might suit their interests best out of all the social dancing options). Ballroom Dancing really allows for so much personal adaptation and developed charisma between couples and I only mean to assert that social dancers to be may be unknowingly selling themselves short by not exploring all the many varying styles that fall under the Ballroom Dancing category, that's all.

This list is certainly not complete but just to get you started, if you really are interested in the various styles and techniques of Ballroom Dancing type social dancing, here are a few of the specific dance styles you might enjoy reading a little more about and possibly considering a lesson or two in:

Foxtrot
Mambo/Salsa
Merengue
Polka
Rumba
Cha-Cha
Viennese Waltz
...and plenty more..
