First of all, look up what diseases and conditions that the breed might develop. Find out if you can actually deal with these conditions if your pet happens to get one of these later on.
Learn what type of attention that your dog will be needing. Some don't need much but others are very social and get depressed with limited human contact. Be fair to the pet and get one that fits your lifestyle.
Read about the breed's habits. Your home might fit their day to day needs. For other's you might not be able to provide the environment that makes the pet as happy.
Be sure that you don't get a breed that is going to effect the family negatively. Some are allergic to certain types of dogs and others have issues with the shedding that might be there. Learn what your breed of choice does.
Some are hard to train while others are easy. If you aren't experienced, avoid breeds that need more attention to do the basic training of your pet.
Learn the grooming needs of your pet. It's important that you know the costs that it's going to take to groom the pet properly and know how often this is supposed to be done.
Look at the long term costs of the pet. If there are future medical needs, you need to be aware of what these costs might be. If these are too high, you might consider a different type of dog.
