What You Need to Know About Hair Loss

Understanding Hair Loss

Heide Lynne Canlas
Not a few people suffer from excessive hair loss. Such a phenomenon is not something that should be taken lightly, for hair, as has often been said, is one's crowning glory. Unless one is highly confident, being bald, which is the consequence of excessive hair loss, would have adverse effects on his self-confidence which, in turn, would affect the way he carries herself in front of others.

One may observe that he is losing a lot of hair everyday. But this should not, at the outset, be cause for alarm. It is but normal to lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair a day, because such is part of the hair renewal process. However, if one notices excessive hair loss, meaning the loss is observably more than the normal range stated above, then that is the time that he should start worrying.

In order to deal with this problem, it is necessary to understand the components of human hair and what causes it to shed. It is only by tracing the roots of the problem that one can have hopes of solving it.

Hair is made up of Keratin, a special protein which is also found in our fingernails and toenails. One strand of hair is composed of three concentric layers: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla.

Excessive hair loss may be caused by a variety of reasons. Among these are the following: medication and treatments, such as chemotherapy; exposure to chemicals and radiation; hormonal and nutritional factors; thyroid and skin diseases; and stress.

Knowing what it is precisely which causes one's hair to fall is the key to solving the problem. For example, if the cause is a skin disease, then attention and care should be given to that disease in order to eradicate the source of the hair loss. Or if the cause is stress, one should learn to relax and get rid of all the tensions he faces in life. It is not necessarily true that the cause of hair loss is only rooted on the scalp or the general area of the crown. Corollary, it does not necessarily follow that the only solution to hair loss is taking in various commercially produced hair growth products.
