Rock climbing appeals to all types of people of different ages and backgrounds and there are varying ways in which you can practice this sport yourself. Traditional rock climbing is typically performed outside on mountains or cliffs but indoor rock climbing has been gaining in popularity over the years.
There are many benefits to indoor climbing such as protection from the elements and a more comfortable, safe-feeling while learning to climb. We live in Central Texas and this year we have experienced one of the worst droughts and heat waves in history. It just isn't practical to be out climbing in this weather but indoor rock climbing allows you to go every day if you wish since it's inside in controlled temperatures.
If you're new to indoor rock climbing, here are some things you should know.
Indoor Rock Climbing Walls
Rock climbing walls are artificial structures designed to imitate the type of environment you would find when outdoor rock climbing. There are different types of climbing walls designed to meet all needs from the beginner to the advanced climber. They provide you with the perfect environment for learning how to climb and then advancing your skills.
Some facilities have large areas of manmade structures resembling mountains while others have climbing walls or pillars or varying heights. Each type comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different skill levels. You can also practice different types of climbing techniques.
Indoor Rock Climbing Facilities
Indoor rock climbing facilities offer a great place to hold family trips, birthday parties and church or school outings. It's also a great place to spend time with friends or to have an adventurous date. Many facilities can be booked in advance for large parties and some can accommodate smaller groups without a reservation.
They also often have clubs, classes and other learning opportunities and lessons. Many indoor facilities also have outdoor climbing clubs and opportunities. With memberships, you can climb as much as you want. Our local center has a great family membership rate.
Safety and Skill
While the same safety precautions are taken for indoor climbing as outdoor rock climbing, there are a few added safety benefits. For one, the floors are usually lined with cork, recycled tires or other material that makes a soft landing if you do fall. They also are specifically designed with safety in mind so you will not be bumping into sharp rock edges. Another safety benefit is that you do not have to battle with the weather.
This allows people of all ages to build their rock climbing skills in a controlled environment, giving them the confidence to go outdoors and climb as well if they choose to.
Indoor rock climbing is gaining in popularity and you can find them in all types of places such as college campuses, fairs, gyms and a variety of retail stores such as the Bass Pro Shop. This sport has many benefits and when you use an indoor facility, you can go climbing all year long in comfort.
