You may be confused as to what an infrared sauna is. When most people think of a sauna they think of Finnish saunas: sitting in a hot and steamy room, sweating it out -- and while infrared saunas are hot, they are nowhere close to steamy. Infrared saunas are getting increasingly popular with those who are health conscious as they are not only more comfortable than Finnish saunas, but also reap more benefits since you can stay in them longer.
These new types of saunas use infrared radiant energy to heat you up -- not the air around you. Much like the heat that light emits, infrared radiant heat only affects physical objects, such as your body, and not the air. Because of this, it's much easier to breathe in infrared saunas for most people and they can relax for a while longer.
An infrared home sauna comes in two main varieties: Cabin and portable.
The cabin infrared sauna is, as the name suggests, modeled to look like a sort of cabin. Having one set up in your own home, you need a room that is not humid and either some or quite a bit of room, depending on the model you get. These cabin models have an elegant look to them and you can get them in just about any type of wood. The prices vary depending on size, the type of wood, and the type of heating mechanism the sauna utilizes. There are several ways to create infrared heat and different models utilize different methods.
While the cabin style sauna looks much more refined and gives a more authentic spa experience, the portable styles are much more affordable and take far less space. They are called portable for quite a good reason: You can fold them up when you're done and put them away until the next time you want to use it. It's sort of no-frills, but for those who want to be able to relax and detoxify in their own home on a budget, portable infrared home saunas are a sure bet. Set up as sort of a mini-tent, you are granted holes for your arms and head to stick out of the sauna.
Really a portable infrared home sauna is the ultimate in convenience because you can read or watch television while still relaxing. Whichever type you choose, you are in for an incredible experience that no one even thought was possible to have at home before.
