What You Should Know About Internet Service Providers

The Multiple ISP Connections

Ron Legarski
Internet service providers allow people to connect to the Internet. Each company that specializes in this field can offer several ways to connect and at different prices. Anyone considering a new provider or change in service should understand all the methods available for connecting online.

Using the Internet uses two computers to pass information between each other. Usually the user's computer and the computer of the website that the user is visiting is involved in this communication. There are several methods on how a person can get online.

It is not uncommon that Internet services give out special features to the customer. Some of these features that are given are anti-virus software and specially branded web browsers. There are other providers that do not offer much except a means to connect.

Consumers usually determine who they will choose as an Internet provider usually based on the price tag and the connection method. Here are just a few of those methods.

Dial-up: Dial-up is an old and simple way to connect to the Internet. It just uses a simple telephone line and a computer that has a dialing modem. The user has to initiate the dial-up. After the computer has dialed the number given by the Internet service business, the user can surf to his or her own heart's content.

One complaint of dial-up is that is it extremely slow and for some providers, the connection is interrupted when there is an incoming phone call.

DSL or Digital Subscriber Line: Digital Subscriber Line has a telephone wire just like dial-up, but really does not dial. The wire is specially made with a filter for high frequency waves. These waves allow the web surfer a much faster experience than dial-up. Also, it does not get interrupted when there is an incoming call.

Satellite WISP: Satellite Internet can also be associated often with satellite television. This is just the transfer of information to a satellite in space that is broadcast back to the consumer's home. People who live far out from cities find this a great Internet connection as it is faster than dial-up.

The only bad part about this type of service is when there is thick cloud cover or there is bad weather. Connecting to the Internet is impossible during those times.

Cable ISP: The same cables used for cable television now have wires within that can filter in the Internet into a person's home. Cable internet can be really fast, but it is not so cheap when compared to other services like DSL and dial-up.

Wi-Fi WISP: Wi-Fi, or sometimes known as wireless, is a portable way for anyone to use the Internet. Often it uses a wireless card or a means to connect. Customers just have to buy a usage package. There is no need for a phone line or a cable. The downside of Wi-Fi is that it is not available everywhere and that a lot of times it can only be accessed within certain distances.

In addition to the services mentioned prior, other ISP connections may include 3G and 4G Wireless, DS1/T1 Line, DS3/T3 Line, Metro Ethernet, FastE, GigE and Optical Carrier Circuits (OC1, OC3, OC12, OC48, OC192, etc.).

The Internet is always changing and advancing. It is likely that more methods of connecting will become available in the future. Anyone looking to buy from an Internet service provider should carefully look over things like price, service features, the company's reliability, and customer service. There are many providers out there, so it is important to choose the best available.
