Pot Belly Pigs are used as pets and appear to make good companions on the condition that owners supply them with the necessary care and apply some effort. They require about the same care as a dog, maybe a little more. They need to be mentally stimulated by playing games, training, etc so they don't become destructive. Pigs are very intelligent, more so than dogs, and need lots of stimulation, just like a dog breed like the Border Collie. You have to be careful not to overfeed or let them snack on your dog's food. As long as this pig is properly confined, not allowed to run the streets unleashed, and properly cared for, it should be able to be kept as a pet.
Another thing you should know about Pot Belly Pigs is that they have healthy appetites. Even though they adore snacks, fight the urge to feed them sugary treats and give them the nutrition they require to stay healthy. Pot belly pigs require a low-protein, low-salt diet to remain in peak condition. Besides pot belly pig feed (available from specialty pet shops), you can feed your pot belly pig horse feed or hog feed. If you follow this advice, you can expect your pig to live for 12 to 15 years. Just as any other pets, the pigs also need timely vaccination and health check ups.
Pot Belly Pigs are considered great pets for therapy or emotional comfort animals. Many Pot Belly Pigs are a real amusement due to their ability to perform various feats. (Yeah, but can they balance my checkbook!) They are found to be well behaved and also adapt to human family life very easily. They are wonderful additions to families and make great pets.
Now that you know some facts about Pot Belly Pigs, you can go out and purchase one. Treat them with the proper care and pick out a cool name. Follow these guidelines and most importantly, have fun!
