What You Need to Know Prior to Bringing Home a Puppy

Many people see that cute little puppy in the shopping cart looking for a home at the grocery store and carelessly pick the little guy up and bring him home. This lack of careful consideration's what leaves many dogs in the pound later down the road. There are certain things you need to know and consider prior to bringing home a new puppy. Careful consideration before bringing home a puppy will save you a possible headache later on.

Financial Aspects

Prior to bringing home a puppy, you need to fully understand the financial aspects of taking care of a pet. Sure you may be able to afford a bag of dog food and all the toys with ease, but can you afford the shots and unexpected vet bills? No matter what you do, you can't prevent a dog from getting hurt or sick, especially puppies. This can lead to unexpected and extremely pricey vet bills. You need to think clearly about whether or not you'll be able to give a pet the medical attention they deserve prior to bringing home a puppy.

Being a Parent

While they may have four legs, dogs really are like children. You can't just throw them in the backyard and they magically turn into amazing pets. Dogs require patience and guidance to grow into great family pets. This can mean hours upon hours of training and nurturing your dog. Dogs also have a way of getting into trouble, just like children. You have to make sure you're ready to deal with a dogs learning process. It'll mean puddles on the floor and chewed up books.

Commitment

Bringing home a puppy means you have to be commitment to that pet, not just for a few months, but the lifespan of that pet. This can mean you can be committed to that pet for years. Are you ready for that? Prior to brining home the adorable little guy in the shopping cart, carefully consider if you're ready for such a large task of commitment.

Lifestyle

Bringing home a puppy's also going to cause your lifestyle to change. You'll be sharing a home with a pet and you need to make sure you have room in your home and heart to open it up to a four legged family member. Not only does space change, but your outings change as well. You can't just pick up and go on vacation or have spontaneous outings because someone needs to care for poor little Rover left back home. The level of freedom you once had will change once you bring home a pet.

It's very important to carefully weigh the decision of bringing home a puppy. It's a big decision to make and you can't make it based on the adorable puppy eyed face in the shopping cart. Make sure you're fully ready for all the responsibility that comes with owning a dog.
